Wonderful museum. Don’t miss it. Visit the garden with replicas of houses from all regions of Vietnam first. Check on the time of the water puppet show and go to it. Then visit the museum itself and enjoy the excellent exhibitions of life in the varied regions of Vietnam

Quite Interesting Museum with Extensive Collection
Aug 2016 • Solo
This museum is in a big museum complex that also houses Museum of European Cultures and Museum of Asian Art. It is in the southwestern suburb of Dahlem and not centrally located. However, I do think it is worth the trek since you can see 3 relatively distinct museums in one visit.

All three museums in this complex are a part of "State Museums of Berlin" (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin). With a €50 annual ticket (Personalisierte Jahreskarte Classic), I can visit as many times I want in the specified one year period.

Among the 3 museums in the complex, indeed I think this Ethnologisches Museum is the best one and most interesting (if you are into arts and artifacts from non-European origins). There are good collections from Meso-America (especially Mayan stelae from Central America) and the Oceania. There are even replicas of Maori houses and Polynesian outrigger canoes in the museum. The African selection is not as abundant as some other big museums in Europe but is still respectable. Some Islamic art collection from West and Central Asia can be found in this museum too.

For what it has, this Museum deserves to have more visitors. Maybe due to its location in suburb, it is not as popular as many other museums that belongs to "State Museums of Berlin" system.

Interestingly, from their website, I read that it is closed for now (since early January) and will be relocated to Humbolt Forum, which will be right next to Museum Island in Berlin Mittle (Central Berlin). The new location will make it more accessible and thus, much more poplar in the future. While Humbolt Forum will not open until spring 2019, parts of the collections will be exhibited in museums on Museum island and Kuturforum.

Interested i Asian or So American art? This is the place

Many of the exhibits are in the process of being moved to a museum in central Berlin. Absolutely fantastic collections! Also has topical exhibits such as one of photos and interiews with European seniiors from all of Europe, European folkloric costuming, and folklore examples (SIcilian donkey cart or Ghana coffin shaped like a car complete with seats, mirrors, head & tail lights and license plate). Fascinating mixture.

Well worth a visit

If you are interested in ethnography and Asian Art, then this is well worth a visit. The leafy suburb of Dahlem where it is located, is also very pleasant in itself, and a nice contrast with central Berlin. We visited on a Sunday, so the museum was very quiet and peaceful.

The worst museum I have never been

I can not understand how this things, more of them without a real value that you can find in anlot of souvenirs shops in their countries, can be considered a Museum...
Only the Mesoamerica part is interesting.

Nice exhibit of East Asian art.
May 2016
I wanted to visit the Japanese art exhibit on paintings and woodblock paintings. The woodblock prints were really beautiful although I wish there were more pieces. Both the Japanese and Chinese paintings were good. I also visited the temporary exhibit on the ethnic groups in the Golden Triangle. That was really interesting - covering the various indigenous groups and their livelihood, beliefs, clothing and how they live.

The museum is large and building is bright and airy with a nice garden cafe at the back of the building. It is also situated in a beautiful suburb with many beautiful old houses and many huge beautiful trees that were blooming. Even the U-bahn station (Dahlem Dort) is also interesting.

A pity that one of its display on East Asian art was in the process of being moved away. Seems that attendance here is low and the future of this museum is uncertain.

Hurry before it closes
Dec 2015 • Friends
This is a fascinating place and I was so glad to have been advised to visit as it will soon be closed down. Many of the artefacts will be transferred to the Kulturforum in the centre of Berlin and housed in the reconstructed Berlin Palace. It was engrossing to wander around the ethnographic art treasures. Because of it’s out of town location it was very quiet, I think it will be a much more crowded experience in its new venue.
