When we first planned to travel to Berlin, I wanted to learn more about the area by reading a book that was written describing personal experiences in the Berlin area with some historical information. The book I bought is called The House By The Lake by Thomas Harding. The book describes this summer house built on Glienicke Lake in the 1920s. The book describes in great detail not only the 5 completely different families that lived in this house but also the history of this lake area from 1920 to present. We did drive to the lake with the intention of paying a visit to this little house which has been designated a historical site. Unfortunately it was not yet open and undergoing restoration. We did walk along the lake shore pathway in the area where the Berlin Wall once existed and when built it had separated the little house from the lake shore. Anyone interested in learning more about the Gross Glienicke area and it's history would benefit from reading this book.

Schloss closed at time of visit, so had a look around and walk in the grounds. A pleasant stroll and a few things to look at in the park.

The castle was very classy and elegant. It was a pleasant experience to be here, especially walking around the castle grounds and strolling by the lake.

We visited following a boat tour, stopping at this magnificent place with beautiful gardens. The entire area is beautiful and worth visiting and walking around. There are a number of historic buildings. If you are nearby, this is a nice place if you have time to stop by and visit.

I was attending a meeting during the weekend and had a nice stay at Jagdschloss Glienecke. The room was nice, with at view to the park. Unfortunately I did not know I should have brought my own soap, and there was no shops in the neighborhood. The food for lunch was tasty and the park beautiful. There were good rooms for having meetings.

I attended a wedding at this beautifull place. Since it was held at a large tent just in front of the Schloss, I haven't had a chance to visit it inside. Its located in a very nice park, ideal to stretch your legs or to eat your sandwich.

We stopped here on our way to Wirtshaus Moorlake. This would not be a destination in its own right, in my opinion. It is a former residence styled according to Tuscan villas. The former owner collected antiquities in Italy and plastered them haphazardly on the facade of the building. For any student of antiquities, the lack of curation appears close to anathema. The gardens surrounding the buildings are beautiful with lovely views of the water. Nice, but not a necessarily worth a stop if on a busy itinerary.

If you are visiting the Schloss, which is interesting in its own right, take a few minutes to visit the Glienicke Bridge just a few meters away.

One of the lesser known stops on the Berlin historical circuit is the Glienicke Bridge - sometimes called the bridge of spies - which in a divided Berlin was one of the few places that Russian and American soldiers met out of sight of their allies. It was also the site of three exchanges of prisoners including U2 pilot Frances Gary Powers in 1962.

There are some wall plaques and descriptions on the bridge with photos to commemorate the spot.

Also take note of the old bridge with picturesque engravings in stone on the former Eastern Bloc side.

Built by Schinkel in the 1830s and 1840s for the art-loving brother of the King of Prussia, it recreates an Italian villa and formal garden on the banks of a lake. The garden is full of statuary, follies, and pavilions. There is also a restaurant on the grounds. The interior is being constantly improved and conservation is being carried out in selected pavilions. A wonderful place for a stroll on a summer day. The Casino with sculpture collection is only open weekends.
