We followed the city guide tour on our first day in Berlin. As it cost nothing it was well worth it. Something not mentioned in the guide are 30 something informational stations along the route. They provide a lot more detail than the actual guide. Start from AlexanderPlatz on the north side out and come back on the south side.

This is where the 2007 film was shot. The bookshop featured at the end of the film, the Karl Marx bookstore, actually exists and can be found at no 78. Walk further down Karl-Marx-Allee (away from Alexanderplatz) and turn off down Marchlewskistrasse on the left to find Dreyman's apartment, bugged by the Stasi, at 21 Wedekindstrasse. Karl-Marx-Allee is still a showcase for GDR/stalinist architecture and although the district is now gentrifying and is clearly becoming very fashionable, you will still get a good sense of what it was like here when the city was divided by the Wall and under communist rule.

Karl Marx Straße is a unique and fascinating visit with some beautiful apartment buildings erected in the early 50s as part of the rebuilding of (east) Berlin. I took a couple of hours for the self-guided tour. Starting at Strausberger Platz (U-Bahn) on the north side of the square there is a series of 30 historical plaques with information about the street (Frankfurter Allee). You will walk about a mile east on the street, passing through Frankfurter Tor, before crossing and returning on the south side of the street. Near the end, stop at Cafe Sybille for a coffee/meal break, and see more information in the small museum. Very enjoyable.

Karl Marx Allee is a must see. The magnificently proud boulevard has to be seen as a contrast to Unter den Linden or Kurfurstendam if you are really to understand the differences between East and West created post Second World War. While there go to Cafe Sybille and read the exhibition boards - and if you are lucky listen to the live music.

This street is impressive, it's like you are somewhere in Russia. The buildings were constructed in the sixties.

Karl Marx Allee has to be one of Berlin's most famous boulevards and is without a doubt the most breathtaking.
A superb socialist boulevard built in the former G. D. R. The street is 90 meters wide and 2 kilometres long and flanked by stunning Stalinist style building with huge impressive tower's that look superb.
There is a beautiful fountain here also and either side of the boulevard is dotted with café's,bars and restaurants.
This is a showcase boulevard built in the communist era and look's breathtaking.
We spend three full days of each holiday we take to Berlin each August were we attend the fabulous Berlin Beer Festival ( Biermeille) which is one of the best and most famous beer festivals in Germany behind the Oktoberfest.
The whole length of Karl Marx Alley is packed with beer stalls and food stalls plus live music and the best beer's from around the world and Germany are showcased here.
We had another great visit to the beer festival,a festival we have been attending for many years and what a boulevard to showcase this amazing beer festival.
Even if you don't go for the festival Karl Marx Alley is one tourist destination I highly recommend you visit .

The buildings along this street are beautiful, lovely mellow stone. Well worth seeing. Stop & have a coffee or beer & people watch. Also have a look at the back of the buildings. Interesting street lamps in the style of big brother Russia.

We got the Green Line Bus Tour and when we went onto Karl Marx Allee the whole bus was in awe !!!
Please look at our pictures that simply do not do this major artery of Eastern Berlin the kudos it deserves !!!

If you are a history buff and interested in everything DDR....this is one of the least changed spots of the old "East Berlin"....a quasi 'not quite soviet', yet obvious mixture of 1950's socialism and German quality construction (Meissen tiles) with a Stalinist influence. What IS missing is what I remember my first there in the early 80's before the fall of the wall. It was the people who seemed to be dressed in what retro folks may call 70's trendy.....but that's all they HAD to wear. By comparison, one can still obtain a sniff of the former regime in the Alexanderplatz....but it has been mostly smothered out....so take a stroll down the former Stalinallee...now Karl Marx Allee and say hello to Walter Ulbricht for us all.....
