A model of what big city railway stations should be.
The new Hauptbahnhof in Berlin is a spacious marvel. At different levels it accommodates long-distance trains, regional trains, the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn. Signage is clear and helpful; the escalators are always running. This is a model of what railway stations should be.

    Signage could be much improved
An fabulously modern and clean station but daunting to the uninitiated. The station is huge and we didn't find it easy finding the right platform to catch our trains. It was only with the help of the apps like Citymapper and Google Maps that we found the correct platform. We we really struggled when we tried to catch the U5 line into town, as the signage is very poor and the apps couldn't help this time. The escalators heading up have an 'S' sign next to the platform numbers and those going down have a 'U' sign. We assumed this meant all the platforms downstairs were U platforms, but it was not the case, so we spent ages looking for the U5 on these platforms without success. The Tourist Information office were unable to direct us, so we gave up. We were frustrated as we are used to the underground system in London where the tube lines are very clearly signposted. The next day, we found a Youtube video which showed an extremely discreet entrance to the U platforms near platforms 7 & 8. Only once passing into this entrance did we spot the first small sign to the U5 line. Once we had this knowledge, we found the line to be an excellent way to get to the centre of the city. In all other respects, this is a fantastic station and the trains run with incredible efficiency.

    Easy to use central station
Central train station of Berlin. Catch all the trains you need from here. We stayed close by to take advantage of this. Can be a bit confusing to work out which platform to take for which trains but you certainly get the hang of it.

Wow, this Hauptbahnhof is top notch. It feels like you're truly walking into a mall with trains stopping in. Such a welcome feel with nice shopping and restaurant options, trains on different levels, and good flow of people traffic where you don't feel too crowded (except in the McDonalds). While I love the classical train station appearance you'd find in most cities in Europe, I must say that I was in awe when I came upon Berlin's central station and it's a beauty inside and out!

This is a pretty big train station and is the main station in Berlin. From here, you can take trains to other cities in Germany as well as to another European city. The trains are mostly on time and if you want a quick bite before boarding your train, there are cafes and restaurants in the station as well.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof is not an attraction itself in terms of heading there to visit it (although that's not a bad idea at all), but one way or another you'll encounter it. Whether you're arriving from the Tegel airport by bus, the last and central stop is here. Or, you'll change your S or U Bahn line here for the place you're heading. Or, you'll travel around Germany from here in their terrific trains. Whatever it is, it will leave an impression on you.
Seeing it not knowing what it is, more likely you'll anticipate it's a new shopping mall. It doesn't have that old look set in some classic style historic bldg like in most European capitals. Contrary to that, it's a high end glass/steel construction.
The station is almost spotlessly clean, very easy to navigate due to good signing, has many shops of all kinds and eateries as well.

Very confusing Railway station ,which tries too hard to be a shopping centre rather than an actual railway station.if you have to change to get another train , especially after your connectiing train was over two hours late you have to check the main board for trains. However there appears to be only one and that is way down on the first level and even then its not as clear as other German railway stations. The over designing and over engineering in this station is very apparent and although a great piece of buiding it is far too complicated and confusing as a railway station . What is needed is more train information on all train times on every level not just the ground. More staff and clearer signage .

This station is located in Berlin and is one of the biggest railway stations with different directional trains passing through 5 levels of platforms. The facade is made up of glass and gives a beautiful look. There are stores and multiple cuisine restaurants on the first floor. The only thing they need to add is more no of toilets.

There is no question that the construction of this central station is a masterpiece, but only if one is well-acquainted with the timing and tracks for the respective trains. No matter what is announced via the public address system, that train will likely not arrive at that level or track, and then it becomes a mess trying to run and catch the correct train.....even the DB ticket office provides you with incorrect information. The "red caps" in Munchen are far more credible and reliable in providing assistance in traveling in and outside Germany.

Often times the self service ticketing machines in many European cities only provide partial information and can be intimidating to use.

This is not the case with those at the Berline Central Station and other S-Bahn stations across the city. We found them to be convenient and easy to use.

This was our first time at this station because there is an express train FEX from the Brandenburg Airport.

Our hotel was located near Friedrichstrasse station. So the S9 Bahn to Friedrichstrasse would probably have been more convenient.

The weather was nice and we walked to our hotel from the central station. The orientation was a little difficult for a first-timer and our walk took 40 minutes to the hotel and back only 25 minutes when we found a shorter route along the river.

Also, there could be more ticket-selling machines. Now the queues were long.

This is the new gateway to Berlin, located right next to the Brandenburg Gate and the Bundestag. It is one of the largest in Germany.
If you buy tickets at the station, you may have to wait quite a while depending on the time. The quickest way is to buy tickets on the German Federal Railways website, bahn.de. They also have an English page, and if you enter your departure and arrival points (stopovers), several options will appear, and it is very useful as it also lists arrival times at stations along the way and information on transfers. You can also search within Europe (JR didn't work, of course). Some payment methods other than credit cards are also accepted.
If you buy tickets locally, it would be convenient to print out the train information and bring it with you, as it will save you the trouble of having to explain things.
