Another interesting landmark in Berlin Mitte, just a stones throw from Alexanderplatz is the Berlin Town Hall - the Rotes Rathaus. The name is taken from the red clinker bricks that make up the facade of this building, first built in the 1860s. it is home to the governing major of Berlin and the government of the State of Berlin.

Berlin’s Neo-Renaissance City Hall at Alexanderplatz is one of the most famous sights in Berlin.
The nickname Rotes Rathaus comes from the red bricks it was built from in 1869. A 74-meter-high tower completes this red brick ensemble.
The interior is even more stunning than the exterior. The entrance is free.

Close to Alexanderplatz in Mitte District is the Rotes Rathaus. It is a striking building that houses the governing mayor and government of the state of Berlin. The Rathaus was created by Hermann Friedrich Waesemann and was completed in 1869, it was based on the Old Town Hall of Toruń, Poland. The building suffered heavy damage from allied bombing in World War II. At the time when Berlin was divided the East Berlin Magisrtate used to convene at the the Rotes Rathaus. I visited the building previously when the Berlin Wall existed, it was good seeing it again in different times.

Impressive from the outside and very much enjoyed and appreciated the craftsmanship of both the brick makers and the skilled layers. Not to forget the designers and architects but the 'brickies' are masterclass.
Passed many times but decided why not stick my head inside for a bit of a sticky beak and it was well worth spending a little time - surprisingly no hard earned to have a look. The interior is almost as outstanding with impressive stair case, stained glass windows, arched ceiling and some fine marble sculptures to a dire. Particular note are the stained glass windows incorporating the coats of arms of the various boroughs or districts the make up the city.
Enjoyable experience.

Who knew that the design of the Red Town Hall of Berlin is based on the Toruń Ratusz? Amazing. Good looking building, the Rotes Rathaus, which makes sense because the Toruń gothic architecture is on the Unesco list. Anyway, it's a looker, even more so when Berlin stops its endless renovations of the town, obscuring nice sights. Nice stop before or after visiting the Nicholas Quarter and the Marx-Engels Forum.

One of the, in my opinion few, memorable architectural works of the place. Among the structures that perhaps left the most impression on me, perhaps for the contrast with the rest of the landscape, perhaps for the charm it inspires, being stranded in a predominant greyness... I don't know. It's a shame that it also left me feeling a bit discouraged, as I have already written several times about the tourist attractions of the German capital, I always have the impression that they are valued too little and that they are very self-referential and more suited to domestic tourism than for the foreign one. Aim to encourage more Europeans and non-EU citizens to visit you.

Huge red City Hall that stands out in the Alexanderplatz and it's a must for us travelers! England-like red bricks.

The Red City Hall of Berlin was named for the color of its distinctive red-bricks. It was built between 1861-1869 in the style of North-Italian Renaissance
It is said that the Rotes Rathaus was modelled on the Old Town Hall of Toruń, Poland, But they are not exactly the same.
It is such a gorgeous building. Other than the magnificent structure, don’t miss the interesting reliefs above the arches. They shows the history of Berlin.

Currently, they only have the permanent exhibition "Berlin through plaster casts 1790-1850" and the temporary one "Berlin as a LEGO-brick model". Both are advertised (only in German) on the web site of Berlin's city council.
