Parliamentary history of Germany - the museum that is not well publicized
Apr 2013
This museum is not well signposted in the travel books- so that is why I have said it is not well publicized and yet we found it most informative. We visited the Reichstag- Dome and the pamphlet pointed us to this museum which holds the Bundestag exhibition on German history. the pamphlet says "The exhibition , entitled Wege,-umwege(milestones, setbacks , sidetracks) is open everyday except Mondays from 10-6pm with a later closing time of 7 pm in the period from may to September. It is located at the German Cathedral (DeutscherDom), glendarmenmarkt1, 10117 Berlin Www.bundestag.de/kulturundgeschichte/ausstellungen/Wege/index.html( in German) We wandered in ,and we're warmly welcomed by staff who took our coats. We were given headsets with commentary (English ) and walked through the exhibits that provided a detailed history of the parliament . The exhibits were of comprehensive, with video , images etc. In addition we Gained an appreciation of the cathedral buidling as we walked through the exhibits- with staircases connecting the various levels etc and peaked views out of the dome of the cathedral I was surprised at how hard it was for me to find out any information about this exhibit - no details on my numerous berlin guide nooks the information in the exhibit was so interesting and informative for exploring , explaining, and understanding the historical events in German history. I would Like to suggest that the name of the museum, Bundestag exhibition on German parliamentarian history be used for the attraction in addition to or in place of the title of the exhibition, milestones setbacks sidetracks and insyead of the German words of the exhibition as s shown

This one-of-a-kind museum is run by the German parliament, and charts the history of German democracy from around 1850 up to the present day. It’s a detailed and serious exhibition, which will probably only appeal to those with some existing interest in constitutional politics – but it’s well-presented, free to visit, and makes interesting use of the old church it’s contained in.

Displays on different floors chart the foundation of Germany, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi seizure of power and the emergence of modern democracy. (There’s also a small section on the GDR, though you do get the sense they’re trying to airbrush Communism out of this particular history.) You can visit a cute little replica of the Bundestag chamber, complete with its own glass dome, and learn all you could possibly want to about how German laws are made.

One note of warning: it’s a very wordy exhibition, and the text is all in German. I believe there’s an English audio-guide (which I didn’t use), but if you can’t read German I should think it’s quite a laborious process to work your way around.
