From the outside, the synagogue is very nice. Inside was a decpetion, as nothing was rebuilt after the war, and there is not much left of the original building. There was however an interesting exposition on the way to remember the shoah, with many filmed testimonies.
I think however, that this is not a place to.viist in the first place when on Berlin.

The Neue Synagoge is a striking building from the outside. Yes, it has been partially destroyed in WWII but many parts have been renovated. Going through the displays it gives you an excellent idea of how enormous this congregation was. You can really "feel" the history. We absolutely loved the video films about Jewish Germans talking about their history and identity. Would definitely recommend visiting the Oranienburgerstrasse! Lovely man at the reception who is open to any questions and comments.

The Centrum Judaicum is in the front part of the Neue Synagoge on Oranienburgerstrasse. This is the part that survived Kristallnacht and then wartime bombings and subsequent post-war neglect. Restoration started in the late 1980's(GDR times) and was completed early 90's but you can still see traces of war-damage even in the renovated part. From photos and by going out (with a guide) onto the back lot you appreciate just how big the synagogue was: there was room for over 3000 worshippers. The two towers and the main dome were also renovated and the large dome is again a landmark on the Berlin skyline.
The centre has many objects and documents charting its history and the story of Jewish Berlin. I visited with a British school group and we were given a very interesting guided tour. We had walked along Grosse Hamburgerstrasse before going to the synagogue so had seen the Jewish High School (with its police guard), the Old Jewish cemetery and the monument to the deported on the site of the Old People's Home. This gave us more of a context for the history of the area and the synagogue's place in it. All in all an excellent visit.

Lets start from the entrance, I've been in a lot of museums in Berlin.
Never had that kind of a security check.
3€ for the permanent exhibition - which is like...3 rooms of nothing at all.
2€ for the dome - you see rooftops, and the climb there is dangerous.
3€ for the not so permanent exhibition
3€ for an audio guide
0.5€ FOR A PAMPLET!
And after all, dont go there, its a waste of time and money, the service is very bad and the exhibitions are VERY BORING!

We waited 20 minutes to get in even though the line up was small. The security staff were exceptionally rude, shouting at people in bad English and German which most tourists could not understand. There is no need for this kind of security in Berlin. You would think they were protecting diamonds. When you get in there, after paying €3, are only two rooms with some pictures and a relics from the synagogue which was destroyed in the war. You could Google the same photos online. Save the three Euros and enjoy the beautiful facade from outside.

Thought this would be an interesting place to visit, and to get the view from the dome.
On arrival the place looked a little impenetrable with police guarding outside and airline style security to enter. We decided in the end that maybe the police were there to warn people off entering!
Off to buy tickets for a family of 4 - that'll be EUR 13 for the permanent exhibition. More for the dome. More for the temporary exhibition. We decided to keep to the minimum. Hold on - you can't take umbrellas & bags inside, so more money for the cloakroom please...
Inside the permanent exhibition there was little more than a few relics and bits of masonry from the original building. Interesting to look outside at what used to be there. Then we realised that was it - no more! We wandered up the stairs and think we ended up in the temporary exhibition - which had even less to it. Certainly didn't miss the dome considering it was a wet day and we'd had far better at the Reichstag free of charge.
Honestly, a complete waste of time and money - there's little to see, and it just feels like a money making operation...

Wanted to visit the centre but I was met with the rudest ever security woman who would not speak English, although she made it clear that she understood me. To those who read this the incident took place on 06 December at 12:20pm. Please make sure that at least the people you hire are at least polite. Shame.

In contrast to other reviews, the museum here is excellent. It consists of three rooms that tell the story of the synagogue and the community that surrounded it. There are rescued elements from the old synagogue building and lots of original documents and photographs that tell the story of Berlin's Jewish community prior to the Holocaust. A must-visit for tourists interested in Berlin's Jewish history. We did not go up to the dome because photographs are not allowed. If you exit the synagogue, turn right until the corner and cross the street, you can take great photographs of the synagogue building. Also, make sure to go to the courtyard outside of what's left of the synagogue so you can get a sense of the scale of the building.

The horribleness of what was done to the Jewish population is beyond comprehension or understanding, it is just so horrible. What makes this even more confronting is that since only 7,000 of a pre-war population of 170,0000 remained, even if the money could have been found to reconstruct the Synagogue, what was the point, too few were left to use and maintain it.
The selective restoration and preservation of this site serves as a unique and memorial to those who shaped and defined this community. It is remarkable and the emotional jouney and experience.

This is a slice of what once was in Berlin before 1939. It is basically an exhibit and only a small part of the synagogue was restored. You can get a great idea of the beautiful, majestic structure it once was.
