13th-century town hall that has been painstakingly reconstructed after the WW2 bombing of Wurzburg. Only the Grafeneckart and the gable front of the Red Building escaped damage. The Grafeneckart stands out with its striking blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.

This beautiful Old Town Hall was built in several stages from 13th century to 15-16th. It’s one of the landmark of Wuerzburg. The most impressive part is the Roten Turm (from about 1660) and the wonderful facade painting from 16th century. It’s a must-see site!

We walked up to the Rathaus or the City Hall which looked relatively simple except for the gorgeous red coloured southern entrance.
On the left side of the Rathaus, was the Gedenkraum 6 März 1945 Memorial which commemorates the 20-minute Allied bombing raid which took place on the 16th of March 1945. Most of the downtown buildings of Würzburg were damaged and destroyed in the resultant firestorm. Countless lives were lost, specially of women and children.
It is difficult not to notice the horizontal lines cut into the archway on the right side while exiting from the Town Hall. They are the marks left by floodwaters in the three devastating floods that affected Würzburg
Adjoining the Rathaus and near the Four-Tube Fountain, is the Grafeneckart, the oldest part of the Würzburg Town Hall built as early as 1659.
The square in front of the building is called Beim Grafeneckart; a prominent sundial, the painting of a green tree and the bay window can be seen on the south facade. It is by virtue of its square shaped 55 meter high Romanesque tower, that this the historic building standing between the Domstrasse and the Alte Maunbrücke can be spotted from afar.
A scale model of the WWII bombing, starkly depicting the extent of the damage to the city caused by dropping of 1000 tons of explosives on the night of 16th March 1945, and loss of 5000 lives within twenty minutes is housed in the Grafeneckart.

The town hall of Wurzburg is a historically grown group of buildings from different eras. Once of the most beautiful buildings and only recently renovated is the Grafeneckart. It is a five-storey solid saddle roof construction and tower with pointed helmet and lantern, Romanesque core around 1200, Gothic reconstruction with tower elevation 1453, extension with Renaissance volute gable 1593/94, Baroque portal designed 1695, cellar building early 15th century with former council chapel, Gothic 1399. In the ground floor is a documentary about the bombing of Wurzburg on 16.03.1945. In the cellar you will find today a restaurant named Ratskeller.
Next to this building you will see the so-called Red Building with a two-storey saddle roof and richly structured red sandstone facade and volute gable, Renaissance 1659/60. It has a very nice courtyard with a fountain, which is embedded in the wall.

The old city hall has been completely renovated and all painted up. It is a lovely landmark in the old town, near the cathedral.

Sandwiched between other buildings opposite the Marketplaz, the arched red brick building may be a little hard to find. Inside, just the one small room is available in which the story of Wurzburg's WWII history is shown on wall boards and a model of the town, encased in a plexiglass display box, shows the town's destruction with its blown off roof tops and crumbled walls following the bombing in 1945 by the Allies. I was really interested in reading the information on the wall boards about the story of the Nazi rise to power in Wurzburg, how they burnt books in the central market just opposite the town hall, the pictures showing the results of the bombing, how returning residents coped with the destruction, and finally about the rebuilding of the town. The display is free and open all the time. The plexiglass display case was smudged with fingerprints on my visit. Well worth 15 minutes. Looking at the town afterwards, I was amazed that the town looked as if it had never been bombed.

Don't miss this little one room display of the destruction of Wurzburg in WWII. Although not a large area the artifacts and displays paint a vivid picture of the results of war had on this beautiful city and its residents.

Entry is free. The display is easy to find at the Rathaus, just before the bridge.
