Käpelle is a small pilgrimage church located high above the city on the mountain next to the fortress. She is considered to have a brand image of the city. You can climb the Marienberg on foot along a pilgrimage path, but you can also take a car to the parking lot from where a short hiking trail leads to the chapel.

This beautiful little baroque chapel is worth a special trip. It is a long hike up, I believe you can take a bus up to pretty near it if you think the hike is too much for you. Since it is a pilgrimage site you pass many interesting statues as you pass the 12 stations of the the Cross on the way up to it.

It is not in as perfect shape as many of the larger churches and chapels we visited and that to me was part of its charm. It feels like it was more the way it was back when it was actually being used. It does look like they are starting the process of cleaning the interior art work.

After the fortress, we'd already decided we wanted to visit the Käppele Sanctuary we could see across the valley on another hill, so away we went. After going for a kilometer or two in the wrong direction, we got reoriented and took what we thought was the quickest and shortest path to it. I think we would have taken less time, and definitely less effort if we'd known how easily you can reach it from the eastern side near the river. Instead, we climbed and climbed a zigzag path from the northern side. It was a lot of work, but we got to see how the more well-to-do live in Wurzburg, since along the way we passed a lot of individual houses, many with pools and fantastic gardens. The Kapelle was pretty cool, but if we had to go again we'd definitely take the straight, 12-station climb up the stairs from the eastern river side. After seeing the Kapelle, we walked down the 6 sets of stairways, representing the 12 stations of Christ and the cross, to a main street.

After sightseeing in Wuerzburg one should visit the wonderful baroque church "Käppele" high above the river Main. Visitors will experience an authentic and well-know pilgrimage site with a great interior, and enjoy a spectacular view over the city. There is a restaurant and cafe behind the church, too.

The path up to the Käppele is impressive in itself. Then there is the fantastic view from the terrace in front of the Käppele. The Käppele itself also offers many beautiful views and should really be enjoyed.
