- BradHong Kong, China182,590 contributionsThis is the 185 metre stone arch bridge that crosses the River Main in the historic centre of Wurzburg. It was constructed in the 15th century, replacing an earlier 11th century stone bridge. Twelve Baroque style statues of saints and other important historic figures were erected on the bridge pillars during the 18th century. What was left of these were all replaced with replicas after WWII as part of city wide reconstruction efforts. The Old Main Bridge is easy and convenient to visit as it connects both sides of the river where visitors enjoy sightseeing opportunities in the city. Another popular activity is to enjoy a glass of wine at the eastern end of the bridge. The Gasthaus Alte Mainmühle (wine bar) has a window from which you can order glasses red & white, which you can enjoy along the bridge while taking in the river views, cityscapes, photograph spots and good environs. During Christmas Market season you will also find them selling gluhwein as well.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 12, 2025
- SenoliAnkara, Türkiye18 contributionsGo grab your wine one evening and enjoy the moment. You can buy your wine from the restaurant on the bridge. It is very beautiful in the evenings, you can see the city, it is cool in the evenings, you can take a jacket on. It was a great experience for us. You can't come to Würzburg without drinking wine on the bridge... We visited again in the morning after our daily run, you can have your coffee and look at the city in the daylight.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 14, 2024
- RubemperorVezzano Ligure, Italy3,679 contributionsI was on this bridge with my girlfriend during a day in Würzburg. The structure, for pedestrian use only. crosses the Main River at the city center. In each tower that supports the bays there are statues depicting various personalities related to the city. At the entrance on the side of the town there are numerous bars selling wine and street food. Many people flock to this area both to have a drink and to take beautiful photographs with the river as a backdrop.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2024
- KatielouAustraliaHobart, Australia2,037 contributionsThis Old Main Bridge was built from 1473-1543. Around 1730, several statues of saints and important figures from Würzburg’s history were placed on the Old Bridge. It has Gothic-style architecture with twelve arches spanning approximately 185 meters across River Main. While taking in the views one can enjoy a glass of wine from one of the many vendors on the bridge. This tradition has been carried out for years making it an integral part of local culture.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 17, 2024
- Travel with SeanMadison, Wisconsin541 contributionsAlte Mainbrücke was the first bridge built over the Main in Würzburg. It has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, most recently in the 18th Century. Now it is a popular place to enjoy being outside, meet up with friends/loved ones and maybe have a glass of Frankonian wine (there is a shop on the edge of the bridge that sells glasses of Frankonian wine).Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 11, 2024
- Kelly BIowa5,605 contributionsA pedestrian only (plus bikes) bridge with scenic views. It was pretty crowded on the day I went, even though it was a weekday early afternoon. It was interesting to watch a river cruise ship pass underneath it.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten August 17, 2024

No wonder the city walking tours end up here! It was a Sunday when we toured the city and things were a little quiet with access to places restricted. Our tour guide was not the most engaging.
The bridge is a good place to view the river, and a popular meeting place for locals, even the crew of our river cruise boat pointed out this attraction. Of course the main attraction here is the Alte Mainmuehle restaurant on the bridge which has small wine sales booth where you can pay 5€ deposit for a wine glass. They will sell you wine by the glass and there is a good selection, locals were only too keen to offer us advice as to the best wines.
As you drive into this area you are surrounded by wine yards and this is a good opportunity to sample some. The weather was not so good and people needed to wear coats but the place was buzzing, perhaps because it was Sunday but I imagine this to be a popular destination especially in the summer months.

This bridge crosses the river and gives you a nice view. But more importantly it is a hang out for people at the end of the day to buy a glass of wine and stand on the bridge to socialize with other people. We were standing next to a couple and found out that they were from Hamburg on a 4 day holiday. We got to talking and it turned out that their first names were the same as ours. Fun times. There are places you can buy wine and they make you deposit 5 euros for the glass. You get it back once you turn the glass in.

You have to at least walk on the bridge to admire the statues and learn a bit about the history of the area.
The bridge may be crowded with wine drinkers. Just offer to take their photos!
The views across the Main and back into town are excellent.

Small idyllic bridge from old town of Wurzburg to the big castle on the top of the hill.
The bridge has some nice statues and an amazing view to the castle. There are cafes on both side of the river. And after walking up the hill to see the caste in summer heat we had some refreshments at the water mill restaurant. There are also “hole” in the wall serving where you can buy wine and other refreshments to enjoy at the bridge.

Stopping by the bridge for a glass of wine is a must. There are shops which sell glasses of wine at the town end of the bridge and down on the river. You will pay a 5€ deposit for your glass which will be refunded when you return the glass. Do NOT set your glass on the bridge! Not sure why the woman was yelling at me but it was relative to placing my glass on the bridge

This bridge breathes history and is some kind of a time machine, taking you back a few hundred years when Würzburg was the Fürstbischöfliche Residenzstadt. The river Main, who has seen it all, majestetically flows underneath. The only spoiler are the many empty wine bottles at the boardwalks - remainders of the many drinking feasts of the night before, obviously.

Our first tourist spot after reaching the wonderful city of Würzburg was the Old Main Bridge which is one of the most popular landmarks in Würzburg. It is the second oldest bridge in Germany and it connects the old town of Würzburg with the quarter of the river Main (pronounced ‘Mine’ which rhymes with River Rhine into which it drains) and the hill on which Fortress Marienberg is located.
To those of us who have been to Old Town, Prague, the Old Main Bridge would look similar in pattern to the Charles Bridge of Prague. The twelve statues that are posted on either side of the bridge as a reminder of the Renaissance period are those of saints and prince bishops of Würzburg.
Among the many statues, the ones that were particularly noteworthy and important with regard to Würzburg's history were those of Saint Nepomuk, Saint Fredericus, the statue of Charlemagne, and the statues of the three Irish saints Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan.
The bridge was destroyed by bomb blasts in 1945 and had to be rebuilt after the Second World War.

This bridge is one of the landmark of the city. It connects the Old Town and the other side of the river. It looks alike Charles bridge in Praque, both of them have many old statues. We walked there going to visit the castle. It was a sunny day and lots of locals and tourists had a drink there, like in a party.

I find amazing people who leave heartless reviews ie "I don't know what can attract people here..." I won't say more about this.
For a start this was one of the stop from our Budapest~Amsterdam cruise. And I would ad it was also, I was tempted to use 'MOST', but in fairness to the rest of our trip, will use 'one of the most' rewarding place with visited. I don't know what makes people tick But I loved that Bridge. On one end it shows the town and behind, way above, a magnificent building in the midst of manicured vineyard. The other end also has a little of the town with a bushy background. Yes you can enjoy a glass of wine there whilst you're enjoying the area. Wurzburg has also much more to offer in its town.
After being back a few years in Sydney. I needed the attention of a Hearing specialist and found one, would you believe, native from this lovely town! This certainly revived my wonderful memory of this place.
As such I read a little more about it, and was amazed to learn that one of the 12 statues on this bridges was depicting the father of one very important people whom I had to learn about during my years in primary school in my almost forgotten native France... None other than Charlemagne!
***Why I am limited to 2019 ad 220? I went in June 2016!
