The walled Alt Stadt ("Old City") Rothenburg takes you back in time....walking on cobblestone streets and walks...while viewing the "half timbered" homes, many originally constructed in the 1500's. You must look at all sides of the half timbered homes and you'll think your eyes are lying to you....there isn't a straight nor plumb wall in the house....they built the homes... More

I only wish we could have stayed an extra day in Rothenburg. The Christmas museum is wonderful as are many of the shops and restaurants. The buildings are gorgeous. The people were so friendly. It was a wonderful change from the bigger cities.

I have yet to go to Carcassonne, but this was mind-blowing experience. This is so quaint yet real, and the guides will give you the history of this medieval town. Incredible place to spend an afternoon.

Lots of cobblestone streets and ambiance and the main square makes it easy to linger and enjoy. Lots of nice restaurant and shops and the gardens are especially gorgeous. Lots of interesting history and well preserved.

It can be really crowded during the day with all the day trippers, but if you stay the night, you have the place almost to yourselves in the evening and early mornings. Perfect time to go explore.

Not much else to say as the whole family just loved walking in the streets, on and outside the city wall. Loads of great photo opportunities. Many nice places to taste the south German specialities. However the famous "snowball" pastry will never be my favorite. Missed the night watchman tour as it starts at 20:00 (English)

I've been to Rothenburg twice in a span of 20 years, and it continues to be one of my favorite destinations anywhere. Walking through the Old Town is pure joy and wonderment. You literally feel like you have taken a step back in time by 500+ years. Give yourself at least 2-3 hours to stroll through the Town Square and... More

We had a wonderful day in this medieval town. The architecture is as you would expect and original. The photo opportunities are endless and the views over the valley are wonderful. There was some interesting shopping with the original Christmas shop and museum and some original handmade clothes and artwork. The people were very friendly and open.

Yes...it is touristy....and crowded... But it is gorgeous. Fun shops, beautiful churches, intriguing museums. I could have stayed for hours!

The old town is a great place to wander around, particularly if you walk along the walled sections which are beautifully preserved. Full of history and many typical German period buildings. Well worth staying for 2 - 3 days in our opinion.
