Took two of my grandkids to Rothenburg two days before Christmas to celebrate my granddaughter's 16th birthday. The walled portion of the city was as phenomenal as we had imagined! However, I must've misunderstood...I was lead to believe that there would be little to no cars driving within the walled part of the city...but this was definitely not the case! On the contrary..not only were there far too many cars..the drivers were very aggressive...seemingly wanting to run us tourists over! Made me feel like taking my Yankee dollars elsewhere to spend! Shame on Rothenburg for such bad driving within such a pristine setting. If you want to keep those tourist euros coming, you should consider not allowing such aggressive driving within the old part of the city.

The market square is dominated by the impressive Renaissance facade of the town hall with the baroque arcades in front. The construction of the present building began in 1250, after the old Gothic town hall had burnt down ten years previously. The Gothic twin building was completed at the end of the 14th c.

Ende 14 Jhrhunderts warder gotische Doppelbau fertiggestellt

My husband climbed this solo. He said it was good climbing until you got up near the top and then you had to crawl out to the viewing area. Great view once you got out there, so worth the effort. If you aren't agile, this probably isn't the tower for you.

The climb was not exhaustive as it was broken into several different sections but it certainly was dangerously steep. Anyone with a slightly heavier build would find fitting through the openings of the floor challenging to say the least. The climb led me to the highest covered floor, which is just a staircase away from the top. I hesitantly paid an entrance fee, hoping that I would not be disappointed.

It was terribly windy at such a height, and yet the mesmerizing vista of the whole town of Rothenburg easily made me felt like at the top of the world. The horizon towards the furthest hills was visible under the clear weather and one could see where human civilization ends and where nature picked up. For exhilarating views, this could easily be one of the best.

Was the entry worth the fee? For me it was but not everyone would share my sentiments, especially if the weather is not as beautiful and time is not so sparing.

This venue is only open at limited hours in winter, and we were lucky to find it open on a Sunday afternoon. The climb to the highset bell tower is steep, cramped and not for the faint-hearted.

First there is the spiral stone steps (about 3 spirals), then across the floor to the turnstile (counts people in and out to limit numbers at the top), then about five sets of staircases (old original wooden steps, worn and steep) and you arrive at the cashier, just before you climb out onto the catwalk. One Euro is the fee, but worth it on a clear day.

There is only room for about 4 people on the catwalk, and no passing is possible.

At about 48 meters above the street, the view is spectacular.

Great for the photographers and some panoramic shots.

It is cold up there on windy days, as the wind chill increases at the top.

Great view!

We woke up early and climbed to the top of the town hall. It's not bad of a climb compared to for instance Cologne but the final stairs are fairly narrow to try to squeeze through and you do have go down backwards. At least 200 steps in total. There is a small fee once you get to the top but a small price to pay for the amazing view. The top has a spectacular 360 vista that is unobstructed. Probably not the best for those who have a fear of heights. It is also quite narrow so essentially you can only go in one direction. I would highly recommend that you take the effort and time to climb this wonderful structure. Enjoy.

Went into the place wondering what it really was - the main building is deserted but we found a turnstile which is remotely operated. Not knowing what we were doing we pushed the button and were allowed in. Up loads of stairs winding up and up we came to a ticket booth, paid a nominal amount and gained access to a glorified ladder which took us up to the top of the tower. The viewing platform wasn't big and if someone decides they love the view so much half way round that they decide to camp there for 10 minutes, you're there for 10 minutes, but the views of what I think is the best preserved medieval town I've visited are second to none.
