A huge mural on a city street that is enlightening as to the scale of size difference in this Old Testament Bible Story.

Interesting 16th-century mural of David and Goliath
Dec 2019
One of the many interesting buildings to see in Historic city centre of Regensburg is the Goliathhaus (Goliath House) which was built along Goliathstraße in 1260.

What makes this heritage building particular unique and interesting to see is the large scale mural of a fight between David and Goliath, which you will see while approaching from the north from Brückstraße.

The mural was created in 1573 and depicts Goliath as the massive giant in armour, reaching upward several floors. His left arm is shown cleverly resting on one of the building windows while he peers downward towards David. By comparison, David is much smaller, bent over, preparing to sling a stone towards Goliath. We know how the story goes after this scene.

Large mural

This is a huge well painted mural, depicting the Biblical scene of the fight between David and Goliath, on the front of an historic building. It is in the old town centre so is easy enough to find on a walking tour.

Nice Mural
Sep 2019
We walked upon the Goliathhaus with the huge mural of David and Goliath while touring around old town. Nice wall painting at the end of a narrow street coming up from the old stone bridge.

Unexpected

Wonderful wall painting suddenly percieved at the end of a narrow street coming up from the old stone bridge - children will love it and there is a nearby description of the origin of this (in fact) very old, street art.

So Big You Can't Miss It

As our tour guide lead us down the streets of Regensburg, the mural of Goliath was in front of us in large fashion. Goliath's spear is almost to the fifth floor windows, so you'll know it when you see it !

There are two people pictured in the mural. Of course Goliath is the largest figure, standing erect and tall with spear in hand. However there is another man ducking down to the left -- of course it's David. I looked up what the scene was depicting and it says it represents a haughty merchant who loses against the honest merchant. I guess that makes sense since you are in the shopping district.

The mural was originally painted in 1573, and refreshed many times. Luckily Regensburg escaped any major damage during WWII, so the town is one of the best preserved medieval cities. The building that the mural is on is of early Gothic architecture with the arched Gothic windows.

Do walk by, as it is impressive and one of the landmarks of the city.
