Too many good castles and palaces in Europe for the tour operator to have included this as an event let alone the final event of the cruise after many much better.

Delightful medieval city. Worth strolling around as you make your way to Thurn and Taxis Castle and St. Peter Cathedral.

Our tour was an optional excursion from a Viking Cruise that included the Christmas market and a guided tour of the palace. The Christmas market was more upscale than any other that we visited during the cruise, however, it was the only one that charged admission fees. All of the sales booths were uniformly constructed and naturally decorated with evergreens. Products also seemed to of good quality, many handmade and mass-produced imports were not evident to us. Foods and drinks (including champagne) were good and it was very nice to have wood fire warming stations available in many places. Train and carousel rides also were available for kids. However, the Palace tour was only average despite a good, competent guide, since photography is strictly prohibited and enforced. And if any royals are in the chapel, tour groups can not enter as happened to exclude us. So missing the chapel and not having any photos, I can only vaguely remember what was in the palace...just a general recollection of there being some nice rooms, furnishings and decorations. The Christmas Market was definitely the better part of the deal but still the high cost of the excursion.

There is an option at Thurn and Taxis to purchase admission for the Carriage House Museum and the Treasure Chamber only, and this was a good choice for our family with children. Judging from the appearance of other tourists on the grounds who appeared to be coming from or heading to one of the actual palace tours, we would have been a bit under dressed. (We were also didn't want to worry about attention spans and behavior when touring a palace that is still a lived-in residence). The Carriage House/Treasure Chamber section allows you to see numerous carriages used by the T & T family over the years, which was interesting for all. The attached Treasure Chamber has some of the family's valuable items on display for the public. At first we thought that there was just the one level with a variety of interior items. These included table service, a large collection of valuable snuff boxes, accent furniture, and ceremonial items once used at the Imperial Diet. However, the docents then directed us upstairs where there was a very large collection of guns (hundreds), as well as many items relating to the T & T family's history running the postal service. The current princess's wedding dress is on display there and also some other clothing and domestic pieces (musical instruments, children's toys, etc.) Adults can get a grasp on the the history of the family and how it fits into the history of Bavaria and Germany at large, from touring the Carriage House/Treasure Chamber. Kids will enjoy the carriages and weapons. Probably between 2 and 2.5 hours is enough time depending on your interest level. The adjacent St. Emmeram's Church would be the logical (and free) stop before or after. Both are within walking distance from anywhere in the old city.
