Nurnberg Hauptmarkt (Nuremberg Main Market) is a charming market in Nuremberg’s Old Town. It is located about 15 minute walk away from Nuremberg Central Station (Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof: hbf), and Nurnberg’s famous Christmas Market opens in this main market during Christmas season.
We had great time visiting this market last September. The market was dotted with historical chathedrals, fountains, shops, and vendor stalls. It was so memorable to visit the impressive cathedrals such as Sebaldukirche Nurnberg (St. Sebald Cathedral), Frauenkirche Nurnberg (Church of Our Lady), and St. Lorenz Kirche (St. Lawrence Cathedral). We also strolled along the main roads and the side roads, stopping by at many shops and vendors stalls. The City Hall building (Stadt Nurnberg Rathaus) in the area was impressive, and 14-th century Gothic style “Schoner Brunnen” (Beautiful Fountain) was charming. Tugendbrunnen (Fountain of Virtues) near St. Lorenz Kirche was intriguing. The market area was filled with crowds of shoppers and tourists, generating pleasant and festive air. I would highly recommend visiting Nurnberg and its main market (Nurnberg Hauptmarkt). Since Nurnberg is only about 1 hour train ride from Munich, I would also strongly recommend Munich visitors to take a day-trip to Nurnberg and its vibrant Hauptmarkt.

We were here in December for the Christmas Markets and it truly felt like the heart of Nurnberg. The old church is here and the beautiful fountain. The Christmas Market was busy and pretty. Carolers were singing in front of the Church and it really did feel like Christmas here. If you are contemplating a visit to this city consider going in December. It's really beautiful at that time of year. Cold? Yes. But if you dress for it you'll be fine and you'll be letting yourself in for a treat.

We were here during Christmas Market season, and so our only experience of the market was for that purposes. However, just on its own, this square is large and centrally-located within the old city of Nuremberg. It's really no more than a few minutes walk from all of the other major tourist sites, and there are numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants immediately surrounding the square.

The Hauptmarkt ist the most central place in town. Best time to visit is when there is some kind of market actually going, be it the famous Christmas market in December or also one of the markets connected to the many festivals in town. On any other day, there are plenty of food stalls for fruit, vegetables and the like.

The square is surrounded, partially, be some lovely medieval buildings and churches. You can walk to pretty much any place in the old city center from here within a short notice.

Not recommended: to eat in a place in the immediate vicinity of the square. Most of those places are of the tourist trap variety.

The square is located in front of the Church of Our Lady and the Schoner Brunnen is on one side. It is one of the pictures that you see of Nurenberg.
We stopped by just after Christmas so they were dismantling the Christmas market. Because of that, we weren't able to look around the area too much.

Beautiful square overlooked by several magnificent buildings and the Frauenkirche church. Noteworthy is the Schoner fountain. It would be nice if the Christmas market continued until the first days of January, instead of seeing the workers dismantling the wooden houses typical of the Christmas market.

It was really interesting to see a market from this area of Europe rather than the ones at home. It was extremely different and fascinating to see the different products and produce on sale.

The fresh fruit and vegetables particularly were amazing. If only we could get these back in the UK! Such a huge range of produce and all of it looked fresh and delicious.

And all this with the surroundings of the beautiful buildings you associate with Nurenberg. You are never far from bars and restaurants either so don’t need to go short of something to eat or drink should your shopping take its toll!

We had a brief stay in Nuremberg just before leaving Germany that didn't leave time for much sightseeing but we decided to visit Hauptmarkt in the short time we had because we wanted to buy a few souvenirs to take home. We had no trouble finding exactly what we wanted at a reasonable price [and less than we had seen elsewhere] as well as enjoying the square and the beautiful statue in the center.

Because of the legend that anyone who turns the Golden Ring will return to Nuremberg, we decided to make that a priority, even though there was a line of others waiting to do the same. Fortunately we got up to the ring in just a few minutes and made sure we turned it the requisite 3 times according to the legend. We had also been alerted by our hotel clerk about the Black Ring on the other side which is the one that is supposed to bring good luck so of course we went over to do that, too. Apparently it's not as well-known because there were only a couple of other people over on that side so we finished with that task very quickly.

I wish we had been able to spend more time in the square as there were a lot of stores we didn't have time to visit as well as food vendors, musicians and other interesting things. But we really enjoyed the time we did spend there and if the legend works its 'magic' as claimed, we will be able to see it on our next trip when we return to Nuremberg.

The market was very interesting to walk around but grapes were €8 bit pricey I thought! I think it's definitely aimed at the tourists

Easy to find and we were happy to be able to buy some of the famous Nuremberg gingerbread. We had read that Nuremberg was the "gingerbread capital" of the world and were surprised to find several varieties available for purchase (after sampling of course)!
