City tour through Nuremberg with the Bimmelbahn

2 reviews
Drive through the old town and through the unique history of Nuremberg. From the main market with the beautiful fountain past the Maxbrücke, the St Lorenz church, the Heilig-Geist-Spital and up to the Kaiserburg with its fortifications. Everything is easy for you to admire from the train. You will also learn fun and interesting facts, old-fashioned and current, glamorous and possibly also cruel, romantic and temperamental about Nuremberg and its residents. On this tour you will experience the highlights of several centuries in about 40 minutes and then you can explore the city on your own.

I was really surprised that we were able to head into this area since it looked quite historic. It was even better when I noticed that the village had actual shops and restaurants. The shops inside were really unique and interesting. There was a metalsmith one in there that had a lot of metalwork souvenirs. There was also a nice restaurant in the central area with sausages (but we didn't have time to try it). The cobblestoned road and the small rustic shops was a nice place to walk and look around. I really enjoyed looking around the small village.

Great market in a medieval setting close to the main railway station in Nuremberg. Good variety of small shops with a great selection of gifts. You should include a visit to the silversmith shop, its like a little treasure cave.

As your leaving the main rail station in Nuremberg across the street you will find this beautiful courtyard filled with many different shops and places to eat and sit and enjoy a beer. Showed up as they were getting ready for Christmas season. May have to come back later in November or early December. People very friendly and helpful. Spent about an hour shopping and taking many pics but could have spent more time if I didn’t have a full itinerary planned for the day. A must visit any time of the year.

Handwerkhof is a recreation of a medieval shopping village, making use of the tower and landmark Frauentor, which would have formed part of the historic city wall during the Middle Ages. You can find Handwerkhof just north of Nuremburg Hbf along Königstor. The courtyard opening hours are 7am to 11pm daily. Individual shops within have varying opening hours. What you find here is a quint medieval scene with timbered houses and cobblestone alleys. The shops that line the inner walls of Handwerkhof sell crafts, gifts, local food, drinks. Its a neat little arrangement and worth a quick look-see for those sightseeing in the southern part of Nuremburg. Note - During our recent visit, Handwerkhof was taking part in the Christmas market scene, adding another benefit to visiting during the holiday season.

In the shadow of the Frauentor, which is impressive, the Handwerke Christmas market feels like a bit of Christmas past. Things for sale are handcrafted & have more character than the big markets. Small, but charming, and a nice change from the Christkindlemarkt.
