Stone walls
Mar 2020
Thick stone walls. Nothing really spectacular. In many places they are well preserved or restored. Many defense towers, from place to place.

Very Well Maintained

This is like a gateway into the old town. The walls are really well maintained and is pretty near to the main station as well.

The walls are well maintained and not something I would have traditionally seen elsewhere. Hard to believe that on the other side is a city centre.

Almost entirely intact, walkable

A great example of how old town walls shaped the city (and the river crossing) for centuries. You can imagine how life must have been a few hundred years ago. Essentially free, and one is bever far from a place to get coffee or so.

All these walls cover the Altstadt in Nürnberg. Lot of history inside these walls. I really like this small city

Well preserved medieval city wall
Dec 2019
One of the impressive features of Nuremburg is the old City Wall that remains mostly intact and in very good condition while surrounding the city centre. What you see today is approximately 4 km of the remaining walls which were constructed during the Middle Ages. Along with the Castle in Nuremburg, this was considered one Europe's best medieval defensive fortifications.

Today you can see the wall, old city gates and giant main towers all in good shape while visiting the city. We enjoyed the wall best at Spittlertor Gate Tower at Spittlertorzwinger in the southwest corner of the city centre. There is a nice stretch of wall that runs north and northeast from Spittlertorzwinger crossing the Pegnitz River until you reach the Castle. We also enjoyed the wall to the south at the Frauntorturm (tower) and Handwerkerhof, where you will find a recreated medieval market and village area that makes for a rather fun complement to seeing the old wall.

Memorable

Allows you to get a concept of how far out the old city extended and how much it has grown since. Had storage bins built into the city walls to allow for food to survive up to 2 years if attacked.

Protecting the Citizens of Nuremberg
Oct 2019
The old city of Nuremberg is surrounded by walls and a moat in parts. The walls would have protected the townsfolk in the past. Now they are a decent tourist attraction to have a look at whilst you explore the city. They also help you getting lost as you can follow the wall round to get your bearings.

Walled city
Sep 2019
One of the best and well preserved medieval city walls can be found in Nuremberg. It dates back to XII century, but the construction works of the defense system of walls and towers officially was completed in XVI century.
The total length of the city walls was about 5 km, but after severe bombings during WWII and further destroy of the city almost 4 km still standing.
Together with Nuremberg Castle, City Walls of Nuremberg represents one of the best defense systems and most considerable in Europe.
Worth a visit.

Rebuilt historic walls
Jun 2019 • Friends
These well restored historic town walls encircle the old town and the many round towers and gateways are very interesting. The quality of the restoration is superb and a testament to the cultural and historic city it is. Certainly worth visiting.
