If you are visiting the historic centre of Munich (Marienplatz or Odeonsplatz), then it is worth stopping by this little lane. The lane runs behind the Feldherrnhalle - a building which under Hitler's regime was required to be saluted. Failing to salute would result in a person being arrested and killed. Those people who were resisting his regime would duck down this street to avoid saluting. Bronze/gold coloured cobble stones along this street are a memorial to those who resisted. An intriguing piece of history.

A fascinating bit of history regarding how some Germans refused to walk by a certain spot where they would be forced to give the Nazi salute, similar to how people in North Korea have to bow to statues of the Kim family when walking near them. It's a wonderful form of silent protest and details like this help tell the story of this beautiful city.

Just finding it is quite fun. Just behind Odeonsplatz. Unique little Memorial to those who did not want to give the Nazi salute when passing.

This small street is just behind the Feldherrnhalle, on the southern side of the monumental loggia on the Odeonsplatz. During the National Socialism period, the Feldherrnhalle was declared the site a national landmark, requiring that passersby perform the Nazi salute. Those who opposed the National Socialist would avoid passing the Feldherrnhalle altogether and bypass it using this street.

There's a plaque at both entrances to the street explaining the historical significance of the street. Not a must see, but an interesting piece of trivial.

When Hitler rose to power, Jews were forbidden to pass through the Odeonplatz, and Germans were forced to salute to raise their arms in a Sieg Heil salute as they entered the square. The alternative way that jews and brave dissenters took to avoid the Odeonplatz went through the small allee of Viscardigasse, and a small cobbled stone path marks their way.

Easy to miss this, but it is a great story. I love seeing little memorials like this. Not all Germans agreed with the Nazis, and this is an example of how they got around them.

If you need proof that not everyone in Germany was thrilled by Hitler taking power, then this humble cobbled street running parallel to Odeonplatz behind the Felderrhalle has an incredible history. From January 1933 anyone passing through Odeonplatz had to give the 'sieg heil' salute to the Mazi armed guard posted by a memorial to Hitler's Munich Putsch. Those who couldn't bring themselves to do that cut through here - a gold trail has been painted across the cobbles to remember the bravery of these dissidents. Well worth a look.

You feel a cold shivering down your spine being there where 75 years ago people went through trying just to avoid making the Nazi salute. You can see where the Nazi guards were posted, this is really emotional an experience. After the Nazis got aware of the alley they detained people trying to get through it, being Jew meant you were straight to a concentration camp. Shivering experience.

Known as Druckebergergasse 'shirkers alley' - it has golden tiles on the ground commemorating those locals who used this route to avoid the Feldherrnhalle, thereby avoiding the requirement to hail the guarded structure with a Nazi salute.
