I only managed to find it since I was looking for the Lindt shop in Karlsplatz. The Stachus Passage is located underneath the Karlsplatz where the train station is. The mall has quite a lot of different shops available as well as restaurants and a food court. The supermarkets inside also make it really convenient to get items on the way back home. It isn't very big but does have enough places to grab something quickly or just to look around to kill some time.
It was handy using the passage to bypass crossing the road. The only issue is knowing which exit goes out where.

Stachus is a large busy square in central Munich. It was officially named Karlsplatz in 1797. However, Munich natives want to call the square Stachus, after the pub Beim Stachus.

The imposing Karlstor, a gothic gate of the demolished medieval fortifications, is located here. On both sides of the gate are curved buildings completed in 1902.

A large fountain operates in front of the Karlstor. There is also an underground shopping center.

Also known as Karlsplatz, this is one of the best known public squares in Munich with it fun water feature just in front of Karlstor, which also leads to one of the main shopping streets of Munich, Neuhauser Straße.

Stachus is the area also known as Karlsplatz at the western end of the Old Town. It includes the area beyond Karlstor city gate. Here you will find commercial buildings a few hotels, restaurants, bars, coffee shops as well as an underground shopping arcade known as Stachus Passagen. This is also a major transportation hub with an U and S bahn trains, street trams.

One of the things we liked about this area of the city during our December visit was seeing the Christmas market area and Ice Rink that was setup at Stachus. It was enjoyable watching skaters and having a glass of gluhwein here after a few hours sightseeing in the Old Town.

Apparently Karlsplatz is a recent name for the square and it is often referred to by its former name of 'Stachus' as we saw on the road signs around the 'platz'.

This was the first place we really saw on our first morning having arrived quite late the evening before and it was very impressive, mainly due to the Christmas food and drink market which was set around a makeshift ice rink. It was Christmas Eve.

The market consisted of different food stalls selling a variety of savoury things - various sausages in combination with different toppings and sauces, and sweet things. Beer and mulled wine was a given and the market reminded us of similar places in Prague and Budapest at Christmas. Everything on the ground floor was outdoor and very cold!

Up the stairs, there was a large open area - similar to a terrace but on the first floor - with bars at either end and where smoking was permitted. These bars offered heat and respite from the cold. While not very cheap the mulled wine was much appreciated as was the opportunity to remove a jacket or two.

From the window we could watch people skating on the rink below and from where we could get a better view of the Stachus itself.

The area is very commercial and through the gate is the main shopping street leading to Marienplatz, but all in all this place was a life-saver on more than one occasion!

Stachus is also known as Karlsplatz by the locals.

The Justizpalast is across the road and not to be missed, if you are into architecture.

There are many shops here. It is very lively as you can see many locals and tourists. When you walk through the Karlstor(Karls Gate), you will arrive at Neuhauser Street, which will lead to Marienplatz eventually. There are some nice attractions along Neuhauser Street not to be missed.

Be sure to find the Stachus Passegen in Munich at Karlsplatz. There is a lot of nice shopping places and a GREAT mashed potato stand that serves amazing mashed potatoes with a variety of toppings.

Beautiful area of Karlsplatz where there is a spectacular fountain in the warmer months and changes to an ice skating rink in the colder months. The area is busy with shops, restaurants, and government buildings.
