- Francesca RVarese, Italy518 contributionsUsed as the official residence of Bavarian rulers from 1385 to 1918, the Munich Residence is the largest royal palace in Germany, but above all it is a must-see if you are in the city. There are various types of tickets depending on what you want to visit or a part or the whole building. If you have time and possibility Recommendation without any doubt the cumulative ticket that costs 20 Euro and includes everything: the Treasury Chamber, all the rooms of the palace (including the Antiquarium room that alone is worth the ticket) and the wonderful Teatro Cuvilliés. Keep in mind that with this ticket your visit will last at least three hours, consider a morning or an afternoon. We did not take the audio guide which has an extra cost, but we preferred to walk independently. A couple of other tips that were valuable to me: if you can go during the week and at the opening (at 9) or shortly after. On the weekend you will definitely find more crowds. On Monday morning at about 10 we enjoyed a visit with the rooms and the Antiquarium room empty or almost empty. Finally wear comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot. It 'a wonderful palace, to visit to be amazed and lose yourself in the beauty of a past lavish, almost fairytale.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 4, 2024
- Rita SStockport, United Kingdom314 contributionsYou can literally spend the whole day here which we sort of did, you do get a little carried away. Would definitely buy the triple combo ticket. The price is very good and worth doing. The majority of the time is spent in the museum itself and wondering through all the rooms, would allow at least 2-3 hours, there is a free and separate audio guide for this and the treasury only (nothing for the theatre). You definitely want the audio guide, it is free and gives good information to make your visit more interesting, especially for the treasury. A tip is to pick and choose which bits you listen to, if you listen to everything you will never leave, there is hours of information on it. The museum and the treasury are accessed opposite ends of the building but within the same area, the theatre you have to go outside and a short 5 minute walk. There are no cafes inside (there are WC and not many places to sit down, no elevators and some stairs to the different levels), so if you want a coffee or something to eat you have to exit and go outside the premises but you have to finish the museum first 9or the treasury) as they will not allow re entry to these parts once you exit. You are allowed to take 0.5l plastic bottle of water in with you only. You are not allowed any size of back pack whatsoever and they have to be checked in but this is free of charge. Allow a good hour for the treasury, some beautiful things to be seen here and maybe 20 minutes in the theatre. There were no queues to pay when we were there midweek, early July and such a huge place that any crowds disperse and you can easily take some nice photos (without flash).Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024
- annalisaNaples, Italy218 contributionsOn holiday in Munich you can not miss visiting this magnificent residence. The ticket combined with a visit to the treasure and jewels of the Princes of Bavaria located in a wing adjacent to the residence. There is audio guide service provided at the entrance also in Italian. Minors don't pay. The residence boasts many rooms all very beautiful with furniture, upholstery, lavish paintings of the time. Visit recommended take into account that it takes at least two hours.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 21, 2024
- aulisLombardy, Italy1,847 contributionsI have visited numerous royal and noble palaces around Europe, and this, from the experiences I have had, is one of the most beautiful. Located in the heart of Munich, the Residenz is immense, and requires, for an exhaustive visit, an entire morning or an entire afternoon. The integrated ticket that I made, after some queue, at the ticket office, costs 20 € and allows you to visit the treasury, the palace and the court theater, while access to the gardens is free. It starts from the treasure chamber, which houses masterpieces of goldsmith's art, among which the magnificent reliquary of San Giorgio stands out. Then we move on to the palace itself, with dozens of rooms, each described in detail by the audio guide; the number of rooms is so high, and the descriptions so detailed, that in my opinion it is necessary to make a selection and activate the audio guide only in the most significant rooms, otherwise the path becomes a little dispersive. The most spectacular is the Renaissance Antiquarium, beautifully frescoed. The visit ends with the eighteenth-century court theater, still used to perform operas. In conclusion, this is an Attraction not to be missed when visiting Munich. I only Recommendation to dedicate, as I said, at least half a day, or to consider whether to make a ticket valid for two days, so as to visit it more calmly.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 27, 2024
- BeNaGermany1,412 contributionsWe were in the fountain courtyard at the Solimans Dream light show. This was very nice and is worth seeing. Please dress warmly, there are seating and standing areas. The show begins at the full hour (17/18/19/20/21). Duration approx. 25 minutes. Admission about 30 minutes before the start. Ticket can be purchased conveniently online. Prices approx. 17-25 Euro (discounts see online). Before that we strolled through the courtyards, as we arrived too early. The 10 courtyards (fountain courtyard, imperial courtyard, pharmacist courtyard, grotto courtyard, chapel courtyard, powder courtyard, kitchen courtyard, royal courtyard, committee courtyard, cabinet garden) are a characteristic of the residence. Most of them were built in the course of the continuous structural expansions during the connection of the new wings. Fountain and imperial courtyards in particular were of great importance as distribution, reception and access zones to the residence as well as venues for courtly festivals and ceremonies. From 1508 to 1918, the Munich residence was the residence and government seat of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings. Today, there are many museums and exhibitions worth seeing in the residence. The courtyards are now often used for cultural events, which may be closed. Good footwear is advisable because of the cobblestones. Very nice grounds and the courtyards are free, the museums are not.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2024
- Lilou LAzay-le-Rideau, France79 contributionsThe Residenz München Museum is a real jewel! This magnificent palace offers an impressive visit with breathtaking architecture. The place is huge and there is a lot to see, easily plan 3 to 4 hours to enjoy the experience. It is a must during a stay in Munich. In addition, it is possible to take an audio guide to enrich the visit and better understand the history of the place. We had the chance to attend several concerts with small orchestras playing in several rooms of the palace, and we even met people in period costumes, which added an extra touch to immerse ourselves in the historic atmosphere of the place. A must for lovers of heritage and architecture!Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 14, 2024
- markdebMadrid, Spain214 contributionsFirst things first. To do these properly you need a lot of time; at least 3 hours. We started in the Residenz and the good news was that the audio guides were free. And all the information on the audio guides was very informative, possibly too much as after a while you started wondering how long you would be there. There are a lot of places where you can choose to take a short cut or go the long haul. We did the later but then started worrying we’d miss the treasury so skipped some places. There were a few free toilet stops which were welcome, but a word of warning…..no toilets at all in the treasury part. The treasury bit was a lot less shorter. Can be done in 45 minutes if you just listen to the main bit on each room (10 rooms) but it did say it could take 5 hours I assume if you listen to the descriptions of every bit of jewellery. The combined ticket cost 15 euros which was great value especially as the audio guide was free.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 16, 2024
- DextrosaMadrid, Spain1,691 contributionsA portentous palace in terms of size and pieces to see. Some rooms are spectacular because of precisely how large they are and their decoration. We were able to make the visit very quiet because we went early, however when leaving around twelve-thirty the queue to enter was very long. I find it a highly recommended visit in Munich.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 27, 2024
- Autumn leavesUnited States909 contributionsWe visited this massive museum/residence and really enjoyed all the relics and tapestries, ornate rooms and halls. Staff were available to assist and as a visitor there were sort and long tours. We opted for the long tour and glad we didn't miss anything. It's a short walk from Marienplatz and go early ! When we were leaving there was a huge line. You can also request handicap assistance yo access each area. The church and chapel areas are really standouts and concerts are held in the chapel area. BRing a coat or sweater depending on the weather, very chilly inside. Definitely a worthwhile visit surrounded by opulence and royalty!!Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 29, 2024
- David BEl Barco de Avila, Spain707 contributionsThe Residenz in Munich is enormous. You can buy tickets for the Palace alone or combine it with the museum of the belongings of the Bavarian Royal family or the Baroque theatre on the site. We chose to visit the Palace and the theatre. The Palace tour consists of 103 rooms some of which are spectacular - then you have the state rooms belonging to the King, The Queen, the Prince etc. There is a long way to walk and you will be tired when you finish!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024

The museum itself is amazing, so majestic and worth seeing. You should definitely book the whole day for the visit and come as early as possible if you want to look around and listen to all audio available.
But note that service is absolutely terrible there, you cannot buy tickets online and the guards made us stand in the queue in front of the museum in pouring rain even though there was some space in the hall. At the ticket desk the guy first gave me the tickets to the museum only, without treasury, though I specifically noted that I wanted combined tickets for both. It was possible to change only due to the fact that I checked the tickets right at the desk. The cashier started grumble discontentedly, but changed the tickets.
The cloakroom attendant was even worse as he threw our wet coats together with backpacks on the floor instead of hanging them. Unpleasant block.
Also, note that you exit the museum right to the street and you have to walk a few metres to the main entrance and the cloakroom. It's not a problem unless it's pouring outside like on the day of my visit.

For those interested in history, I recommend booking a private tour directly with the Residenz. I learned so much from our guide, Susan Franke. The Residenz itself is beautiful and worth a visit. My favorite parts were the fountain made of seashells and the hall with Roman statues.

Wonderful royal palace, rich in treasures. Charming lounges, rooms and perfectly furnished rooms, although in some cases they were reconstructions because the original furnishings were destroyed during IIGM. Family combo ticket 2 adults 2 children to access the palace, treasure wing and theater 30 euros in total. Excellent visit lasting about 2 hours to commit the time especially on winter days. The theater is in a separate building, you have to leave the residence and follow the signs. There is a line to make tickets, we recommend arriving early in the morning.

I was overwhelmed by the size and contents of this palace. This was the home of the Wittelsbach Dynasty, and their wealth was fully "on display" for visiting nobles and aristocrats. I had no idea of what I was embarking on when I bought my ticket! One could spend days seeing everything here--provided one didn't begin losing enthusiasm after 3-4 hours (as I did!). I paid extra for the Royal Coin Collection, but it was only 1 Euro on a Sunday. Maybe I was simply getting saturated by palaces and extravagance after visiting castles and palaces for weeks?

We spent almost 3 hours here. I will go as far to say that this was the most beautiful palace museum that we have seen. And we have seen plenty (Versailles, Schonbrunn, Madrid palace, Buckingham - to name a few)
Beautiful well appointed rooms. Though lot of it had to be reconstructed post the damage caused by WWII. The free audio guide was very useful
There are arrows that tell you how to shorten the tour but we did the long one and it was totally worth it.
No kind of backpack is allowed, no matter how small. But they have a free supervised cloakroom for same. You can carry a plastic water bottle of 500 ml if you so like.
The cost of the palace museum was 10 euros per head. If you want to visit treasury and the theatre, combined ticket of 20 Euros is better

Exploring the Residenz is a journey through time, with each room offering a unique glimpse into the lives of Bavarian royalty. The museum is well-organized, allowing visitors to navigate at their own pace. Audio guides are available to enrich the experience, though the sheer number of rooms can be overwhelming.

Very long. If you’re interested in this type of thing you will definitely enjoy it.
You can take different routes inside the museum itself when you’re already walking through, which they don’t tell you beforehand. We chose to do the longest possible route and it took us about three hours. At the begging we listened to the audio guide at every stop but by the end every one got fed up and wanted to get out as quickly as possible.
But in my opinion definitely worthwhile and the thousands of steps we did there😆

The Residenz museum is gorgeous. Luxurious spanning halls and rich in history. You could easily get lost in its halls for a whole day. Though the entrance fair might initially seem quite steep, you get a lot for your money, with the option of a long tour and a short tour. It also has an additional treasury and a concert hall with entrance that can be purchased in a combination ticket.

You can absolutely spend all day here. We did the palace first and the treasury after. If I were to do this again, I would recommend the treasury first, an early lunch and the remainder of the day in the palace. In total we spent 4+ hours in the palace, and it was about 2.5-3 hours in that I realized I could not possibly listen to everything the audio guide had to offer. The staff also warn you ahead of time to keep your coat because the palace is NOT heated in the winter; there are times when you are basically outside during the tour.
A few notes:
- so much of the palace was destroyed in WWII; not much is original
- don’t skip the bronzes! It’s super warm and doesn’t take long to go through
- there is no where to eat on the grounds
The audio guide for the treasury tells you that just listening to the info about the rooms will take you 30 minutes, but listening to everything on the audio guide would take you 5 hours (and again, that is JUST for the Treasury). Overall this section is small (especially compared to the treasury in Berlin) but the audio guide is thorough. Note that last entrance is 4 PM.

Arriving from Marienplatz the Residence, as the Royal Palace of Munich is simply called, does not look so big. It is actually a huge palace that was the residence first of the dukes, then of the prince-electors and finally of the kings of Bavaria. It includes 10 courtyards and three main buildings and was built in different periods, so it is a mixture of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicism. We did pretty much the complete tour and even without an audio guide it took us about three hours. There are plenty of things to see, especially the Antiquarium, the Grottenhof ("caveyard") and the Baroque and Rococo apartments, as well as the Ahnengalerie ("gallery of ancestors"), with its magnificent stuccoes. Following the elevation of Bavaria to a kingdom in 1806, the palace underwent further alterations and extensions and several apartments were transformed into empire style. During World War II, particularly in 1944, the Residence was severely damaged, but much of the furniture had been secured, as had most of the wall and ceiling decorations. In this way the reconstruction took place relatively quickly.

Aproximately how much time does it take to visit?
Written October 4, 2019
I would skip it. The building was leveled in WW2 and rebuilt in 1950's. Interior lacks original detail. It's room after room of the audit tour telling you about where the furniture was obtained and who designed the cloth upholstering the wall. The exterior was poured concrete faux painted to give the appearance of carved stone.

I don't know whether entrance on Sunday is free, but perhaps on special days. The best way to find out is to check the Residenz web site and if necessary, use a translator to get a display in Cyrillic.
The courtyard is always free. Certain students and other visitors may be free, but it appears they are mostly German citizens.

Hello , Can anyone provide me with more specific details about where the entrance is to Munich Residenz ? I have seen several reviews saying it is hard to find but in reading through all of them, I am still unclear as to where the entrance is. We will be parking at the National Theatre so that is the direction we will be walking from. Thanks in advance for any help an advise!

It is in Max-Joseph Platz. As you face the Residenz, the Opera House will be on your right. There are arched entrances in the middle of the building leading to a small courtyard. Enter there. There are signs for it.
The Residenz is huge...something like 130 rooms. If you plan to also see the Treasury, and you should, do the Residenz first, go have lunch nearby and come back after lunch for the Treasury.
