One of the most important universities in Germany. It was also where members of the White Rose resistance movement were active, and memorials to them can be seen throughout the campus. One of the science buildings used to be the forestry department and as a result, several exotic trees were planted there.

Visited memorial to the White Rose student anti Nazi resistance movement in the main entrance hall and the free exhibition about its members just behind it. The university and its current students generously don't seem to mind the constant stream of visitors. Set in the cobbles outside are replicas of the leaflets the group distributed throughout Munich and in the uni itself, which led to the arrest end execution notably of the siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl. The exhibition includes photos and extracts from letters and diaries of the group (all in German , naturally, but no translations provided ). Even if you don't speak German the pictures of those young, hopeful and idealistic people and the thought of their bravery and the terrible price they paid for their actions is very moving .

The buildings are beautiful and the history is amazing to see. It sits on the Italian mile and is close to the city center. There is a exhibition of the white rose group walking toward main building. Just a lovely campus.

The Weiss Rose museum exhibit was closed when we visited but the atrium where the leaflet distribution took place was open. It was amazing to be in the same place where the Scholl siblings demonstrated amazing courage. Approaching the university there are leaflets and pictures of members of the Weiss Rose on the sidewalk. It is another great tribute to the non violent resistance group. Near the university is also the Scars of Remembrance Wall that still has the marks of allied bombing.

This university is not only a magnificent building, it carries the heavy history of the "Weiße Rose", the student organization who resisted during world war II by distributing leaflets to other students in this very university. The place is moving, humbling and is really worth a visit.

So humbling to read about the students known as White rose whose lives were taken cruelly simply because they dropped leaflets to other students in the rise against the nazi regime. Go and see the imprint of the leaflets in the paving stones outside the uni entrance too.

One of the more important pieces to the Italian Mile is the Ludwig University also listed in some places as the University of Munich. An institution of higher learning fits perfectly on this section of street.

Many years ago long before the range of calendar dates suitable for indicating the time of my visit were made available for completing this review I made a planned stop in Munich. It was my first visit to this city. I luckily had found and obtained connections by accident for getting inexpensive accommodations with a dormitory located on Ludwig Strasse. I stayed there for perhaps three or four days. Most comfortable and pleasant and quiet. From there I found my way to the two well known museums and several other places including the Deutsches Museum. Since I did most of my visiting on foot by walking around the city I was lucky to be close to important places. It was my first contact with this university. The dormitory was close to the city center and was reachable by foot. So many places requiring me to make a visit there were a short walk away including Marienplatz, Frauenkirche, Alte and Neue Pinakotek. I had access to the museums and the many places that were places for me to see in those days. An old university was reason enough for me to return later. Much prestige surround this university. I liked staying in the dormitory. Room was clean and the facilities were modernized as things went at that time. I might have eaten a meal or two there. Accommodations in these places during summer months were available at that time. I was traveling on a Eur-rail pass and carrying a regular international student identification card to save money. I did accomplish those goals. I did walk around the campus and liked what I saw. I spent more time walking around the city. I suggest that you look into staying there. This in no way was like viewing a cathedral. I am just commenting about my stay in the dormitory during my visit to Munich. I read about the university after returning home. I did return to stay a second time. A good example of inexpensive accommodations for youthful travelers at that time. I was not an affluent person. This period of time was during the days of traveling in Europe on $5.00 day. I did not want to spend much money on accommodations. There was some advantage for me to stay there. It was safe. I mingled with some of the residents. Library was open for me to visit. Rules for qualifying to stay there then were different. Look into it.
