Great place for events and concerts
Sep 2019
Super active cultural center in the heart of Munich.
Many events and concerts happen here throughout the year. Stay tuned and visit their pages to know when festivals happen, since they are very well organised and free.

We visited the Cultural Center without an special events taking place. Impressive building and facilities. We enjoyed lunch we wished there was a concert we could come back for.

Max Raabe at the Gasteig
Nov 2018 • Friends
Was taken to the Gasteig to see Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester by my sister and we had a great evening. The venue is huge both inside the auditorium and in the split level foyers. We had a glass of Sekt before the concert - minimal queuing as they had a number of bars - and then took our seats. There was plenty of leg room and we had a great view from the stalls - row C. Didn’t use the cloakroom facility and just had my coat with me although most people did check their stuff in. Eclectic audience, some dressed to the nines, others like us in fleeces and walking boots (having come from the airport). Was a great night. Easy transport links to all parts of Munich.

Summer jazz jam sessions in the large cafeteria
Sep 2018 • Solo
Being in Munich for the summer, was pleased to find out about Wednesday evening concert/ jam sessions at The Gast cafeteria. Very pleasant seating indoors and outside. The music has always been good and the drinks well made and reasonable prices. Service is very friendly. While being a cafeteria, all the food is prepared to order. Have been three weeks in a row and haven't been disappointed. Keep in mind it is an early evening event, from 6pm to 10pm.

Excellent concert hall
Dec 2017 • Couples
We saw Bach's Xmas contata with the Philharmonia choir which was superb. The ticket price includes free public transport after the concert - not sure how far that extends but certainly the inner subway area.

Cloakroom. Drinks, desserts, fingerfood and great service. Despite the fact that the concert hall was 60% full the restroom capacity was to its very limits. Also, if you wear high thin heals the iron doormat like accessory is a kill. Hall has comfortable seats and great acoustic.

Premier cultural center in Munich. Home of the Munich Philharmonic
Jul 2016 • Friends
The best Concert Halls in Munich, the city library, theaters, and the home of the world reknown Munich Philharmonic makes this the place to go for the fine arts. Most hotels can get you tickets but it might be best to call weeks ahead to find out what might be playing and get tickets in advance.

Outstanding

Gasteig , the huge Cultural Center of Munich , gives a lasting impression ! It has four halls of various sizes . It is built on the site of a former brewpub with strong historical connotations.
We were there for a symphonic concert given in the largest hall of about 2400 places featuring Lang Lang , one of the top piano players of the moment.
It is a marvel that such a large hall could provide for such an incredible acoustic ! I could understand how was possible to have those wonderful live recordings of the Munich Philharmonic's performances under Celibidache...
It is a pity that the management is offering plastic cups for drinks in the hallways ...
The building is huge , impersonal with no care whatsoever for ennobling the dour aspect of the stairs.

Abonnement Concert Evening: Czech Music
Feb 2016 • Solo
During the recent business trip to Munich, I attended quite a pleasant concert at Gasteig with a program of Czech composers Dvorak, Martinu and Janacek. In comparison to London's Barbican, ticket prices are reasonable and I had a very good seat for EUR 37.30. Having read what Bernstein had said about Gasteig, I was not expecting a good acoustics, but after entering the concert hall I realized that the organizers have improved it using the same simple method used at London's Royal Albert Hall. The concert program was from late 19th and 20th century. I was quite impressed with Martinu's Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani (I heard it for the first time). Gasteig is well accessible by public transport (tram no 16), but the hall is not far from the old city center neither, so I can be easily accessed by foot. Refreshments and drinks are available in the foyer. Recommended.
