The Old Courtyard was built in the late 12th century. It was built by Otto von Wittelsbach as a city residence in the 19th century and expanded by his son Ludwig the Kelheimer. 100 years later, the Old Court in Munich had risen to the residence of Duke Ludwig II, and from 1330 even to the Imperial Castle of the Roman-German Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. On my travel website toeightycountries.com you can find out more about the old town of Munich.

The Alter Hof is the historical residences of various rulers of Bavaria over the centuries, especially the members of the House of Wittelsbach. Like much of the old town, it was restored to the late gothic architecture after being destroyed in World War II. I found that the two storey bay window, again in the gothic style to be the most attractive feature of the courtyard.

The Alter Hof was a castle that existed in the 12th century. Louis II, Duke of Bavaria, lived in it in 1255 and his son Louis IV became the first Holy Roman Emperor. The architecture of the building is very interesting. There is a tourist information center at street level.

The Alter Hof is located in the historic Old Town just north of the Marienplatz down Burgstrasse towards the Residenz. From the 13th to 15th century, it was the residence of the Wittelsbachs. Under the Wittelsbach King Ludwig IV it became the imperial seat of government. Today you will find an information center, shops and café. Like many Munich buildings, it was destroyed during WWII bombings but rebuilt in its historic design.

The Alter Hof (Old Court) was the former Imperial residence of Louis IVth, the Holy Roman Emperor. It was destroyed during the War and has been rebuilt. The modern rebuild is well done and there is some striking architecture. In the basement there are excellent historic displays relating to the City plus a huge range of leaflets and brochures to help with your visit.

This was the residence of various Bavarian kings and rulers between the 14th and 16th century. What you see now is a new building rebuilt as a copy of the original, which was destroyed during WW2 bombing. It’s a magnificent building, with a real sense of elegance.

This was a tour stop to inform everyone that this was the palace of the Wittelsbach dynasty built back in 1250"s. It now serves as a government offices. The glass window structure sticking out is called the Monkey Tower.

One of the very few middle age buildings in Munich. Unfortunately not too much remained but you can have a feeling, how in the 12. century was a castle built.

On our seightseeing tour in the city of Munchen we had a stop at the “Alter Hof”, the location where once emperors resided, in this location the today's visitors can shop or taste wine. By walking down from the “Burgstrasse” coming from the “Marienplatz” have a look to the wonderfull houses, and finally you will pass through a gate to the “Alter Hof”. Although many parts of the building are only reconstructions, the Alter Hof never lost its original charm. From the five components of the building complex, the Burgstock, the Zwingerstock, the Lorenzistock, the Pfisterstock and the Brunnenstock, only the first two have been preserved in a renovated form. The others were demolished and rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War.
