About
Munich City, Third Reich, Dachau, Salzburg, Nuremberg and Neuschwanstein and other Ludwig II Castles. A tour with Curt Milburn is like having a welcoming family friend show you around Munich. Curt's been called "The Wikipedia of History". He specializes in small group and private tours. Tours are tailor-made and Curt finds out what YOU want to see. His City Tours go beyond canned, set routes. You'll see the famous sites, architecture, learn about kings, Hitler, foods and beer. Our Third Reich Tours delve deep into more than when, but why and how the Nazis came to power and you'll see the bombed buildings of Hitler. Curt's Dachau tours are sensitive and remarkably moving and his Neuschwanstein and Castle tours are great fun. Salzburg & Nuremberg are within your reach with Big Hat Tours! Every tour is accompanied by an Apple i-Pad with hundreds of photos to put you into history.

Curt was amazing. We had a group of 6 adults and one baby. We got to see a lot of interesting parts of Munich customized to what we were interested in. Also combined it with a Dachau tour as well. History, but fun and engaging! 10 out of 10 recommend.

Our family of four ( with college-age children) recently toured the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site with Curt Milburn. With a family history of Holocaust survivors, touring Dachau was a somber experience. Nevertheless, Curt's extensive knowledge and sensitive rendering of Third Reich history with effective visual aids on his iPad greatly deepened our understanding of these historical events. We would have been lost without Curt's guidance at this significant stop during our time in Munich. Curt met us at our hotel, shepherded us via train and bus to Dachau and made sure we saw all the relevant parts of the site. We even had bonus time with Curt on our return to Munich as he concluded our tour with delicious recommendations of where to eat in the Viktualienmarkt. This was a top-notch experience and we highly recommend Curt for any of his Big Hat tours with Dachau in particular.

Curt made us feel at ease with any questions or requests and interpreted what we wanted to focus on brilliantly - peppering the talk with a mine of historical facts and anecdotes, and supplementing it all with well-chosen photographs. It gave us a real insight into the beliefs and customs of previous times, some of which still exist to the present day. We covered the churches and architecture as well as the build up to World War II. The trip covered the main areas as well as out of the way places and there were lots of recommendations along the way. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

We did the Munich National Socialism though I'm not quite sure what the actual name of the tour was. Kurt showed us the monuments that the city had to offer particularly those that are in connection to the National socialist history of the city. I personally have a great interest in history and Kurt happily answered all my questions while still keeping those that usually do mot care too much about history engaged and interested. The iPad was useful as it allowed us to compare buildings and monuments with their state in history. Overall great guy and great tour. Would definitely recommend!

I had great walking tour in Munich with Curt! He is knowledgeable, approachable, and humorous. He knows the city and its history well (ask him about his book on Munich history!) and really understands how to present it in a memorable, interesting way. I'm in the process of booking another tour with him right for when family comes to visit in a couple weeks!

Curt’s private tour to Dachau concentration camp was excellent from beginning to end. Curt provided us detailed and easy-to-follow instructions and explained what to expect prior to the tour. My son and I were impressed by his clear explanations and extensive knowledge of the history expressed in the old photos, drawings and amazing stories involve with the survivors he shared with us. We were also impressed by Curt’s care and compassion for his work. We were completely comfortable with his warm and friendly manner; Curt was attentive yet left us the perfect amount of privacy. We recommend his tour absolutely!

My wife and I with some friends just went to Munich, Germany. We absolutely fell in love with the German culture and and how beautiful it was. And we especially enjoyed touring Dachau concentration camp, understanding it's history during the second world war.
Curt Millburn was our tour guide (Big Hat Tours!).
Curt was extremely knowledgeable of Dachau and was really wonderful explaining what horrific events that went on there. It was an experience we'll not soon forget thanks to Curt!

We were fortunate to have Curt to ourselves for two full days of touring. We spent half of day one on a private tour of Dachau concentration camp. The second half of our day was seeing highlights of Munich. Both tours were outstanding. Curt was was quite knowledgeable, and he augmented his talking points with photos and other relevant information on an iPad.

On our second day, Curt safely and efficiently saw us from Munich to Nuremberg. Upon arrival, he let us get setup in our apartment before continuing on the explore the city and its amazing Christmas markets.

I recommend Big Hat Tours without reservation. Curt is a kind, professional, friendly guide who brings a great deal of relevant context to his conversations. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment with him.

I had reserved Curt months ago for a 3rd Reich Tour, at that time I was the 1st client for that date. I agreed to have people added if someone else wanted to be on that tour. I was disappointed because the tour we got was a City Tour, not what I had agreed on. But it still was interesting and Curt is very knowledgeable about the city. Just not what I was expecting.
He seemed to walk very fast and it was difficult keeping up to hear what he was saying, he would stop once in a while and brief us about the sites. At times I felt that he just wanted to rush thru the tour because he had somewhere else to go. I agree he knows the History and the City but..... I would not hire him again. I also thought that the tour was to be 4 hours and ended up to be about 3 hours and then we all went for lunch, maybe he considers lunch as part of the tour.

Eighty seven guests in a row posted Five-Star reviews for Big Hat Tours. Wow that makes me proud. Giving tours is a complete joy. We dive deeply into history, tickle you with legends and show you the most beautiful sites of Munich and Bavaria. A bit heart broken, I've offered this lady a full refund.

Maybe Kurt was having a bad day but we were all very disappointed with our three hour walking tour of Munich. First, let me say that we’re a very friendly, easy going and respectful group. We had only one day in Munich and wanted to hit all the highlights and get a basic knowledge of this beautiful city. Instead we seemed to wander thru the city past historic buildings, without comment. We know you can’t cover it all but would have loved more general information. We would then stop at random places where Kurt would go into a very long and very detailed explanation. I’m a European history major and it was a bit much for me. But what we liked least was the attitude; Kurt came across as well, curt. He seemed to be irritated with questions and would brusquely tell us to follow him, although we were all being very careful to stay close. My husband, who never has a bad thing to say about anyone, mentioned several times how rude and condescending the attitude was. There were also political diatribes thrown in randomly. Can’t say we didn’t agree with some of it but it wasn’t the time or place. We also found it odd/unprofessional that he had a vape cigarette in his hand the entire tour. The final straw was taking time out of our paid tour to complain that Trip Advisor is no longer fair to the independent tour guides and how important it was that we all give him great reviews. Really? He even sent a follow up email to go over all this again. Maybe Kurt was just having a bad day. It happens. But we all agreed -not only was it our least favorite tour of the many we have taken all over the world, it was our least favorite day of our two week trip to Bavaria. Wish we would’ve skipped it.
