This is a real mixture of old mixed in with new and a lot of tourists. The glockenspiel is a must and the shows are 11, 12, and 1700. There are several churches that are several hundred years old. There are souvenir shops, bierhauses, upscale stores, restaurants, and little shops.

A must see on your visit to Munich, you cant miss all of the tourist witnessing the famous Glockenspiel. Also lots of great shops & a central underground station there as well. Its best to get a historical perspective of this sight as well as all the others through a walking tour.

So- if you are a tourist in Munich you have to go to Marienplatz- its a central part of old Munich that has the Glockenspiel ( automaton clock thing in the tower). Its loaded with tourists, and in the end- not much to see. 4 Stars only because I don't think you've been in Munich if you don't walk through... More

The centre of the all touristic activities in Munich, Marienplatz offers a eclectic range of architecture, as well as the usual overpriced (and mediocre) bars and restaurants. Conveniently served by the U-bahn and S-bahn stations of the same name, you will be hard pressed to find a Bavarian in amongst the sea of foreign tourists waiting of the Glockenspiel to... More

Very pretty area with the Rathaus in view. We went to the bakery and restaurant just there on the 2nd floor. Lovely breakfast. There was a bit of renovations going on so quite a bit of areas covered and walkways closed off but still quite a nice square to wander through. Rathaus clock chimes 11, 12 and 5pm-go watch the... Everyone has seen it on TV: the neo-Gothic City Hall with the famous 'Glockenspiel', filmed by millions of tourists every year. The square is busy all year round, and the natives many times find it pretty difficult to make their way through all the tourists with their cameras in hand! All around there are old Bavarian restaurants with genuine Bavarian... More

The Marienplatz was the place I loved to walk and shop. There is exquisite architecture, and very beautiful shops along the Marienplatz, and if you happen to be the close to the winter holidays there is the most wonderful Kris Kringle Market, an open air market in the evening with hand crafted holiday ornaments, and gifts of all kinds !!!... The clock automaton (moving figures) is well worth watching - every hour, lasts for about seven minutes.
