Glockenspiel at Marienplatz a must see!
The glockenspiel is a clock with dancing figurines that put on their show at 11:00 AM, Noon, and 5:00 PM. It is a do not miss experience when visiting Munich. Make sure that you arrive early to get the best vantage point to see and hear this charming spectacle.

    A beautiful square
Marienplatz square is a historic heritage of Munich city. It is located in the centre of the city of Munich. Its history dated back to 1158 founded by Henry the Lion. The Marienplatz is the point at which all important streets meet and is the centre of Munich's life. The square is surrounded by important buildings and shops. The St Mary cathedral and St Mary Column are situated in this square. Many street personalities and street musicians are performing in the square. Packed with people and shoppers. A place for us hang out and shopping in Munich.

    Marienplatz and Neues Rathaus streets
In general a nice street, similar to the most city centers in big European countries. Plenary of shops, stores, restaurant and bars around. Main sightseeings like Asam Kirche , Frauen Kirche situated in this street. While walking down Marienplatz will get linked with Neues Rathaus street that is not much different than Marienplatz itself. The one of the possibly most beautiful Catholic Church St.Peter’s Church ⛪️ must be visited in this street

    Must-see plaza in central Munchen
Marienplatz (mar-EEN-platz) is the center of town. Between Odeonplatz and here you can easily walk to many of the "downtown" attractions (Rathaus, Hofbrauhaus, market, beer garden, church and cathedral) and many shops and restaurants. It's a lovely square and a great place for people-watching.

    What a fab city😁
Got the hop on hop off bus from the train station which I think was about 25 euro each.. Hopped off at Marienplatza which is a must when in Munich. The buildings are just amazing. We didn't hop back on as we found a few German bierhauses !!! Will definitely be back to explore Munich a bit more .

    Great to visit at night
Marienplatz is a great place to visit. Especially at night when it is not that crowded. You should walk from Marienplatz to Stachus at night. The Stachus-Area is also illuminated in a beautiful way at night. On this way when we walk past 10 p.m. there was a very funny street musician (Helly Meiler) near Hirmer store. He did a great show and it was fun to listen.

    The heart of Munich
Came here several times during my stay, mostly because it is the centre of Munich. Walkable to several major Munich sites, popular meeting point for walking tours, and with a metro stop, this historical plaza is hard to avoid - but it's so iconic for Munich, you wouldn't want to. It's practically mandatory to see for anyone visiting the city. There's nearly always are large number of people around, many of whom will stop all of a sudden to take photos.

    Come for he 11:00 glockenspiel.
A must see for visitors to the city. A really interesting square, a range of architecture, some original and some rebuilt after bomb damage etc.. Interesting history too. Visit at 11:00 for the glockenspiel chiming.

    Glockenspiel a must
Perhaps it was the indifferent weather or the large number of tourist milling around but we didn't feel that the Marienplatz ranked in the great public spaces of Europe. But you will no doubt cross it at some time during time in Munich; try to do so at 11.00am or noon, the times the glockenspiel in the Rathaus does it's thing. Definitely charming and worth seeing.

    Great people watching
Great for people watching, especially around time of dancing figurines. There are a lot of people in this square most of the time. That night it was crowded too, and not a bad place to watch people. Tremendous historical value if you really want to take the time to search it out.

Beautiful location but we first visited on a Sunday and everything was closed. We also went to the square for New Year's Eve. We got there at 9pm and nothing was happening. All the shops were closed. No music or entertainment or activities for revellers. Reservations are a must for restaurants near the square on NYE, of course. Fireworks are no longer allowed to be set off in the square so if you are looking for that on New Year's Eve in Munich, pick another location in the city. All that being said, Marienplatz is a must see on your visit to Munich.

This seems to be the central area in Munich with lots to see and do around this area. The main thing to see here is the Glockenspiel but there are plenty of museums and churches to look in.
We came by just after Christmas so they were packing up the Christmas market that was here.
Aside from the historical things to see here, there are plenty of food and shopping options. It is a must stop for someone who hasn't been here before to see some sights. There is also an information center close to the Glockenspiel entrance that we used here to get an idea of the surrounding area.

I knew Tues, Feb. 25 was Mardi Gras this year, but my husband and I just happened to be in Munich's Marienplatz for a short visit. Wow, were we surprised! Great fun, lots of music, costumed revelers, all the shops closed at noon, restaurants were open. We ate at Hofbrauhaus, and the bands paraded through to cheers and dancing. Who knew?!

Wife and I wandered over here on a Sunday and realized that the glockenspiel would do its special show while we were there. We debated leaving, but decided to stay and watch. We were not disappointed! If you are here during the limited times it does the full show, stop to watch and enjoy. It is marvelous to think how long it has been doing it and still functions. Plus there is a story it tells as it goes through its 10 minute “show”.

There are many attractions within walking distance of Marienplatz, so it is a great place to start your visit. During the holiday seasons, there are Christmas markets and Easter markets here and farmers markets at many other times throughout the year. I recommend scheduling your visit so that you can enjoy the mechanical Glockenspiel performance on the tower of the neues Rathaus. It begins at 11am and 12pm daily.

Marienplatz offers shopping, cafés and a whole lot of history.
The gem of this square though is by far the famous Glockenspiel.
This is not your typical clock, it is Its two levels of carved figurines that play out scenes from Munich's history to music.
Make sure to see what times it will be playing before you make your plans. The times vary between the seasons.
You can go to Youtube for a preview :-)

If you come to Munich, you must visit this place. This place is surrounded by beautiful and old buildings but restored .
The big building is the town hall. Twice in the morning you can watch a puppet show accompanied by music at the bell tower.
It is recommended on a beautiful day to rise to the top of the bell tower for a beautiful view of the area

To be fair, we had an image in our minds as to how Marienplatz would look, feel and sound. It's because of Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within (and yes, I realize how nerdy that makes me sound!)

At any rate, all the images we'd had in our heads went right out the window the second we stepped out of the Bahnhof and saw the millions of Christmas Market stalls in our faces.

NOT that I'm complaining! I was in Christmas Market heaven.

We visited Marienplatz several times over the course of our five-day stay. It was crowded - except for early in the morning, which was my favorite time to visit.

We did visit some of the "local" type stores on the Platz, but avoided the chains we know from home. It was easy to get lost and turned around with all the stalls and the side streets, but it was an amazing adventure.

Marienplatz served as a kind of "home base" for us while we were in Munich. It was comfortable, had a good variety of restaurants and shops, and had a wonderful vibe. I loved the history and the architecture, and how central it all was.

I would love to go back in another season, to visit the Platz without the market stalls (did I really say that?), and to see the area in sun and warmth. To, you know, see it as it was depicted in Gabriel Knight. Nerd alert!

Make sure you go up the tower of the new Rathaus (there is an elevator), and has a wonderful view and only costs 6 Euros. The Glockenspiel is captivating, there's the old Rathaus (now a Toy Museum), the Fish fountain, St Mary herself, and so many other sights and great places to eat. Great place too start any trip to Munich.
