- Diane TWorld26 contributionsUp in the clouds!A truly stunning view 360 degree view of the landscape. We went up by cable car, though you can also travel by train up the mountain too. At the top you can view the landscape from several viewing platforms or lounge on the wooden loungers or swing chairs. There’s a cafe at the top above the cable cars and if mobility isn’t a problem there’s another at the pinnacle which is more akin to the pub. If you’re fit enough you can even hike up the mountain following the trails (apparently takes some 2-3 hours). Lovely waitress in the cafe, served us coffee and a sharing pancake platter accompanied with raisins and a pot of plum jam full of plum halves. The pancake was sprinkled with icing sugar too. It wasn’t that busy when we went, so plenty of cable cars available, but it does get packed during the summer so you might have to wait a little longer to get a car. Definitely worth the cost of 27 euros per person. The cost of upkeep of the cable car mechanisms and cars must be massive. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 30, 2024
- scotterb60Farmington, Maine62 contributionsPerfect Day trip to the mountains from MunichThis is the perfect excursion for people visiting Bavaria or Munich, who want to visit the Alps but don't have more than a day. On the edge of the Bavarian alps, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is an hour and a half from Munich by train. The train ride from Munich is gorgeous, as the Alps suddenly appear over the idyllic countryside. From the train station it's about two kilometers to walk to Wank Mountain, there is bus service, or taxis. There the cable car ascends with a view of the valley and mountain. The top not only has a myriad of views, glorious photo ops, and scenery, but there is enough to keep one busy for hours - a few places to eat (include outdoors with views), and hiking trails and paths ranging from those who want to descend into the valley to ones that simply explore various views. One can hike for hours, or take a relatively short walk. Paragliders take off from the top, and of course the ride down is as stunning as the ride up. Obviously, mountain lovers can delve deeper into the Alps for more glorious scenery, but this is a perfect Bavarian day trip to provide stunning views, alpine air, and a taste of the mountains.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 5, 2024
- Angela H9 contributionsA mountain viewThe cable car ride up the mountain was spectacular and views from the top just beautiful. It costs €27:50, but with a Konigscard it was free and very good value. You can eat at the restaurants at the top of walk the many paths.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 5, 2024

We took the rolling train to the middle station and have already paid 58€ for it (2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 dog). We found it too expensive for only the middle.
The route is indicated as easy. We don't think so. It is partly very steep, with many high steps and thick tree roots along the way. There were some people on the track who stopped the way up and also how we wondered why it is classified as easy.
The view is great.

Our son & his wife took us (60 year-olds) on this hike; we took the train to Garmisch, walked through town and found the trailhead easily enough. Then we proceeded to climb 5 miles and around 3,400 feet! It was a bluebird day and the views were spectacular. The trail was hard-packed snow and well marked. We stopped at the lovely cafe on the way back down and were delighted with the refreshments,

A beautiful mountain that offers an almost 360 view of the area. The cable cart is cheap and offers a great experience to the top of the mountain. The mountain still had some ice on it which created some mud in certain areas so clean shoes are will definitely get dirty. I highly recommend this.

We went to the Wank Lift by bus, from
Garmisch train station, a ten minute ride. We then walked up to the summit in about three hours, with frequent short breaks. We enjoyed beautiful views of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze, and all surrounding mountains. Also, you cross an Alm populated with cows, and benches to take a rest. This walk definitely requires you to have a basic level of physical strength (700 to 1780 meters). However, it’s only walkways without any climbing parts. One of my all time favorite walks!

We went up with the Wank cable car. The highlight not only for our two girls, 2 and 5. Our stroller got an extra gondola. It wasn't crowded, we didn't have to queue and we could go straight up the mountain. The ride is free with the Königscard. The weather was fantastic. At the top, a great view of the Zugspitze and a playground awaited us. After a short hike with cows, we treated ourselves to Kaiserschmarrn at the restaurant a little higher up with the best view.

Absolutely stunning views!!! Well worth the rather warm cable car ride up there. Incredibly tasty veggie dumplings in the restaurant too. And as we're British, we found the name of the mountain hysterical 🤣

My girlfriend gave it a go, she struggled at first but towards the end we switched positions so I was behind and it gave her a bit more of a push. When we finally reached the peak she almost collapsed, her arms were so tired and I felt such a great relief.

You can get one of the best view of the GAP and the Bavarian alps from the Wank. If your a hiker it’s about a 45 min hike to the top or take the gondola to the top. Two places to eat at the top. This is a ski area during the winter. You can take a nice walk around the area and get a picture of you and your group by the mountain cam. They give you web site you can access and see photo. Good two hour trip.

Thanks

Are there any hiking trails up there? Are they hard?

Is there a time limit on how long you can wank for on this mountain.
Written October 10, 2018
Hi Ciaran
yes, its only allowed between 9am and 5pm weekdays. Any wanking outside this period is frowned upon by the locals.
Hope that helps and enjoy Wank Mountain !!

Is it possible to hike up Wank in October? If so, how long does this take?
Written September 21, 2017
It's possible, but the snow can start in late October. Depending on fitness level- maybe 4-5 hours. You also have to be aware that in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen valley you are 700 meters in altitude and then going up the another 1000 meters so the air might affect you too. However, there is a halfway station for the cable car so you can get a ride up/down. If that sounds a bit daunting, you can ride the cable car up and hike around the summit area- that can take an hour or two in itself.

Hello. We will be visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen this Summer, and are considering hiking up Wank. Do you know for certain if we can ride the Wankbahn down only?
Thanks.
Written February 20, 2017
Hiya. It was definitely possible to buy one-way tickets when I went. Hikers are encouraged - there is accommodation and cafe, etc.at the top. I would recommend buying your tickets at the bottom though, as not sure if you can at the top.
Have fun and enjoy the views!
