Let me preface this review by saying this is not about the play, but rather the office staff and policy. My husband and I saw the play in 2010 and found it to be absolutely amazing! We were scheduled to go back in 2020 with friends but alas COVID ruined that. We were offered the option of rebooking or getting a refund. I was told the refund would not include the booking fee, but if we decided to rebook at a later date, we would not be charged that fee again. I even have this in writing (email) that we wouldn't be charged the booking fee even if we requested a refund. So we chose to take the refund because we didn't know where we would be in 2 years. Fast forward to summer 2022 and our friends decided they wanted to see the play and asked us to go. When I booked the package, we were charged the booking fee. When I called them, one guy yelled at me and hung up on me. I emailed them the original email showing their office specifically stated I would not be charged the booking fee and they replied 'well you got a refund minus the booking fee and that reservation is closed'. My email from them in 2020 clearly states we would not have a booking fee even though we requested a refund. Now, they won't honor word and they won't answer my emails. Very poor practices. They have made quite a bit of money from all the people who cancelled and didn't get their booking fees returned.

The Passion Play's reputation is well earned and deserved. It is incredible to consider ALL the musicians, actors, singers, set designers, clothing designers, etc. are residents of this small Bavarian town. Such talent! And of course the story is important as well.
Please know that it is quite long--2 1/2 hours followed by a break for lunch and then 2 1/2 hours. It was past 10:30 when we finished. because of this we would strongly recommend using the restroom before each part. Security was very good and seating although not overly comfortable was good enough. The use of multiple gates for entry and exit moved the crowds fairly well.

The passion play is something greater than everything I have seen. I am very frequent visitor to theatre and have also seen many operas, however this is something else. Nowadays a lot of directors believe that less is better, so they put up a just a couple of chairs on an empty seen. I dislike this very much, and I think that less is just poorer. This is something else, the scene is enormous, and the scenery is not scenery it is permanent buildings. Besides the theatre play there are a very large choir and some soloists and as I can judge a full orchestra. Musical part and theatre parts alternate with each other. The musical parts is based on scenes from the Old Testament and are illustrated with still tableaus. The theatre play, the real passion play, have access to an enormous number of statists. The mass scenes give you a real feeling of how it could have looked in Jesus’s time. This is my real take away of this play. As a believer this gives you really something to remember. And of course, it is something special then some actors enter the scene on horseback several times and it looks just natural. And of course, there are sheep and other animals, even a couple camels. Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take photographs, a rule many ignore. And it is to long acts two and half hours both parts. I understand that it is difficult to evacuate so many people in a pause but it still far to long acts. Still I believe that almost no one regret that having seen the passion play in Oberammergau.

The play was terrific, I have no qualms about the play. In the end, I'm glad I forged through to see the production.

The administrative offices fells short of their responsibilities.
1. I was charged twice for the 2nd half of my payment and it took 5 emails before anyone would respond and refund us for one of the payments.
2. Their instructions to travel from the airport to the town of Oberammergau were not complete. They don't mention how to get from the airport to the bus or the train station. They only mention which buses and trains go to Oberammergau. The taxi drivers lied about the cost of train tickets and we were charged a bundle to get their by taxi for almost 300 Euros. We didn't speak the language, there was no answer at the administration offices, no maps to the train or bus station, no information desk at the airport.
3. Be sure to get the address of the accommodation where you will be staying, they didn't provide the address and it was raining and we had to drive all over town asking for the location of the accommodations.
4. Be Sure to get the phone number and/or email of the place where you will be staying, it would have been helpful to touch base with our hosts ahead of time so they would know what time we were arriving.
5. Be sure to get your vouchers before you leave home. Vouchers are for the play, the accommodations and dining. They didn't send me any vouchers, in fact I didn't know anything about vouchers. I had emailed often the week before and up to the day before we arrived for instructions and confirmation of our tickets and stay in town. We received nothing helpful. Finally, the woman who ran the hostel where we were staying was kind enough to work with us and after two different requests we were emailed the vouchers. Our hosts had to print them for us. Again, our hosts were wonderful as were their accommodations.
6. Just so you know the vouchers were mailed to our home in the USA two weeks after our scheduled date to see the play.
7. It was very difficult to get on WiFi at the airport, we actually couldn't do it and nobody was able to help us. We couldn't even map a location from the airport to the bus or train station, which are both very close. In walking distance.
8. I noticed that people in the tour group had a much easier time, I think since we were not in a tour group our time was more difficult.

This bucket list visit did not disappoint! We had booked for 2020, but with pandemic had to re-book for 2022. Since my husband is very tall, and I could not determine the seat location when booking one or two night packages, we opted to buy tickets directly. This worked well as we had front row seats with plenty of legroom. We stayed at a VRBO in nearby Garmisch Partenkirchen. We parked at the south lot in Oberammergau and had dinner break reservations in nearby Ettal. We had plenty of time to eat and go to the the museum before the second half started. I enjoyed following along with the English scripted books that I purchased before the play began. I also was glad to have purchased a blanket as it did get chilly. I had read about the open roof over the stage, but was glad there was protection because of the storms and the actors did not get wet. The play itself did not disappoint. The music was amazing - would have loved to see the musicians but they were in an orchestra pit. The children and animals were adorable. The choir members were so focused and the acting was amazing. The dedication of this community to work so hard fulfilling their commitment is absolutely remarkable and very motivating. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!!

When it comes to theater, this event is the one to top them all. For five hours you will enjoy the most powerful voices of the adult choir, see how scenes from the Old Testament are woven into the New Testament Passion story via stunning tableaux, and feel the thunderous tension of the Passion of Christ during the last 7 days of His life. Your English translation script will help you overcome the language barrier, as the play is given in German, but even without this assistance, the message of the Passion of the person of Jesus Christ will impact you enormously, as you watch a cast of hundreds of townsfolk present this incredible theatrical performance.

This is a historic play which the town puts on every ten years since the early 1600's. It is about the last part of Christ's life. The play involves hundreds of the town people and is well acted. The facility is modern and holds about 5000 people (although rows are pretty close together and seats get uncomfortable for the 5 hour plsy). They close the doors and start on time, so don't be late. It is worth the trip.

We travel to Oberammergau in September of 2010 and saw the Passionspiele our 2nd night. It was a great experience and we will return in 2022. Lodging was just 5 miles out of town and a short drive to Oberammergau. This time we booked earlier for lodging within walking distance from the Passionstheater.

The Play is performed every 10 years in a year ending in 0. The exception was year 2020 when due to coronvarius pandemic the play was moved by 2 years. It's been the tradition since 17th century when the city was bothered by a plague that decimated the population. In order to put an end to the spread of the epidemy, the people started to pray. In order to commemorate the end of the disease, the people promised to stick to this tradition. It's performed only by local people. More can be found out at Oberammergau Museum. It's good to book well in advance, as it's of high interest to people from all over the world.

What a quaint and charming little village! The shops and shops eateries were fun to browse through and the August weather was beautiful. We attended the Passion Play and were with a tour group. The play is amazing and a high quality production. Bring an extra cushion for your seat as a total of 5 hours for the play is a lot of sitting. Also a small penlight so you can follow the play in English since it’s all in German.
