Don't judge a book by it's cover. From outside this looks like nothing special but inside it is a beautiful, ornate church so unexpected in such a small town. You could easily spend quite a bit of time exploring stunning details in every inch of this building.

Attended this church as we were staying nearby. Prior to entering church, had a walk through the surrounding cemetary with some family plots going back to the mid 1700's. Very interesting. Inside the church we were amazed at the beauty of the statues and paintings on the walls etc. A very humbling experience. Would definitely recommend visiting this place for a visit, without any pressure to any particular belief.

........it would be too costly. This church, the Parish Church Sts. Peter and Paul, dates from the 1730s. It is beautiful from the outside. You have to walk through a small cemetery to gain entrance to the church.
The painted ceilings and paintings are magnificent. But, with regard to the statuary and the golden angels and cherubs, which are in great quantity, I would call them gaudy. But, in looking around, the one thing that I kept on thinking about was how many artists, sculptors, painters, and artisans were kept busy and for how many years. For some, this may be the most beautiful church you've ever been in. For others, the interior may be way over the top.
With that said, it was probably the most uncomfortable church I've ever been in. We were there for a 10 AM Sunday Mass. Near the top of each pew, there's a wooden "bar" that sticks out......right into your upper back. You can't lean back and be comfortable. Oh, maybe that was the intent, i.e., keep the parishioners alert.

A site not to be missed, Not what it seems from the outside, the inside is absolutely amazing. Try to visit in the evening as well. We visited after the Passion Play at around 10.45 pm and were welcomed by the sight of words floating from the floor of the church to the roof, such an amazing sight.

We visited this church during the 2.5 hour break between Part 1 and Part 2 of the Passion Play. Beautiful and inspiring, it has a plexiglass exhibit of the original list of people killed by the plague in the 1600s and then the pledge to present the passion Play every 10 years. After that, no one died.
Sure was a beautiful place to say a prayer and leave a donation. High rococo style, similar in a way to Wies Kirche.

The interior of the St Peter and Paul Church (aka Oberammergau Church) is absolutely beautiful and ornately furnished. It was a blessing for our pilgrimage group to have mass here. The exterior is not that impressive but it's wonderful inside.

The play was good but the town has made a business out of it and lost the spirit and intent of it. (A but like the money changers in front of the temple that Jesus scolded). There is not translation other than a book with the script in other language.
We arrived in the train when it was raining. We went to ask a restaurant/hotel to help us by calling a cab and they refused! Eventually got a cab.
The bed and breakfast was alright, Mammhofer suite and breakfast. The problem was that all the tourists information they provided was in German, including the map and booklet with sights for the area. The breakfast was fine. Only eggs and one slice of bacon for hot food. Cereal and bread with cold cuts also and coffee.
The restaurant servers are rude. (Went to three). To the point that I was literally asking what they meant by the “register before you sit down” sign so I could do what it said. She literally looked at me and turned her back to start clearing table. My husband stood in line to ask someone else and when he got to the front she walked around him! I just got up and left. In the ice cream store they talk over you even after asking the flavor. Unbelievable. We stayed here for 4 nights too so this isn’t a review based on one day. It is the history of almost a week. I advice stay in Munich and get a tour from there. These people here want tourist dollars but treat them like dirt without customer service.

This church is truly beautiful. I had already come to this town, but of course, what is famous are its typical houses with polychrome facades... Visiting this church is normally overlooked, and it is amazing! I loved.
From the outside it doesn't even look like much, but inside it is spectacular: baroque style, very bright and very colorful.
A beautiful cemetery surrounds it.
Access is free.

Enjoyed visiting the Church while in town for the Passion Play. The cemetery is really interesting and full of history. The Church was nice and we enjoyed being outside for a quick rest and a chance to eat a snack before the play.

This church is very beautiful and tastefully, richly decorated. on the outside seems unassuming but bursts with rococo decor inside. Old cemetery nearby is also of interest reflecting the life of the village of Oberammergau.

Are there interior photos of the church?
Written October 12, 2020
Is this church right across the street from the Passion Playhouse in Oberammergau? We visited it in the mid 1990s, and were very much impressed by the stillness, silence, and spirituality.

Do you need a ticket to go inside the church, or can you go in for free?
Written June 26, 2017
To answer your question no you don't need a ticket to go inside. Oberammergau church is a small but beautiful church. The church is about a 10 min walk from the the main shopping area in Oberammergau. Enjoy and have a great trip.
