About
The Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a place of learning and remembrance in Berchtesgaden. The museum informs about the history of Obersalzberg, the former residence of Adolf Hitler and center of power of the National Socialist dictatorship. The exhibition with the historic bunkers shows how mass crimes were planned and ordered in the idyllic mountain landscape.

    Very well done center
We went to the newly reopened center and were very impressed. Entrance and a smartphone audio guide were free. The audio guide was easy to use and you could choose either a 40-minute tour or a 90-minute tour. Displays included the history of the area as a tourist attraction, its Nazi history, and its current status. On the lower level you can access a small portion of Hitler‘s bunker. There are lockers, vending machines, an eating area, and bathrooms on the lower level.

    A great experience for all
Only 5 euros - A must trip if you interested in WW2. So much information and the place is amazingly organised with head set in different languages. If visiting Eagles Nest, make sure you leave time to enjoy here too - you need about 2 hours for a relaxed tour. Then there is also the walk down to the site of the Berghof just a 5 minute walk down, but a steep walk back up. Lots of areas of interest and some stunning view. Of visiting Eagles Nest - it doesn’t open until mid May 😢

    Coming to terms with evil
Anyone interested in NAZI party history should pay a visit here to get an honest look at how the party transformed the area. The center is a strong museum on its own, but then being able to entry a portion of the underground bunker complex that connected all the party leaders homes adds a very unique insight. The engineering is so impressive by itself as to be worth a visit.

    Wish we had more time.
Unfortunately we were rushed through the museum as we had timed tickets to see the Eagle’s Nest and didn’t get sufficient time to really view everything in the museum. In retrospect I would have skipped the Eagle’s Nest and just stayed and toured the museum. It is quoted sobering, yet incredibly important to see. Having visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, I thought the history and perspective here does so much more to teach about the atrocities of Hitler.

Excellent modern museum and larger than expected.
Our first visit to the museum, and we were impressed by the amount of information, the size of the museum, the excellent audio tour, the way the story of the area is told , and the atmospheric bunkers (a real highlight). We opted for the 80 minute audio tour but if you stop to read all the displays as well you could be there for 3+ hours. It goes without saying that the museum is a must see if you’re interested in modern history.

One of the museums or exhibitions that grabs you and moves you. Lots of personal exhibits from the time and originals to touch. In addition to the contemporary history pieces, the bunkers are particularly interesting. You have the option of taking a guided tour or using the audio guide. You can choose between 80 and 40 minutes. But you can also stay longer or switch between the two tours during the tour.

Tip: Excursion tip for bad weather. When the weather is nice, it's a good starting point for hikes - e.g. towards Kehlsteinhaus / Eagle's Nest.

On our transit we stopped here and wanted to see the documentation center with the exhibition. The reception was very friendly. Many thanks to the young and very friendly man with the many tattoos. Admission normally costs 3€, with ID for severely damaged even free of charge. Even the audio guide is free. A great exhibition and even the former bunkers can be visited. You should allow a little more time to read through and look at some things. I would be happy to recommend the documentation center.

We were very surprised by this exhibition and spent much more time there than planned. There is a lot to read and you should take your time. A very informative exhibition! We were particularly impressed by the bunker complex, it's unbelievable what was created there! The staff were very polite and patiently answered all of our questions!

We were not sure what to expect from this place, but after visiting the Eagles Nest, we were still curious to see the bunker. We arrived at 4 pm and there were a few people outside, because there was a sign saying to wait. People told us that you had to book online, but I went inside to ask if we could go in and they said yes (3-4Euros). All of the displays were in German but there were English handouts in each of the sections. If you are not interested in the displays you can go straight to the bunker. There was more there than we expected. Definitely worth the visit.

Very interesting documentation center. The dark German past is discussed here and shown in all its facets and horrors. It still remains unimaginable how people went along with this so massively.
The bunker complex in the Obersalzberg is very impressive.

It was striking that the audio guide contains almost all languages, except Dutch.
It was said that we Dutch understand everything. There they completely miss the point, because they apparently do not understand that you can absorb more information when you can listen to the stories in your own language. Isn't that true of all other nationalities?
