Friedhof (Cemetery) Berchtesgaden is situated behind Maximilianstraße just past the Franciscan Church. This has been the resting grounds of local residents since 1685.
Within the cemetery grounds you will find mature trees and nicely manicured grounds. There are rows of headstones many adorned with flowers and candles. It is a peaceful and beautiful scene.

Great place to seek out the graves of some who figured prominently in the Third Reich. Look for Hans Lammers and
Dietrich Eckart.

We went in April. Every grave had beautiful spring flowers planted on them. It was wonderful to walk around this sacred place.

The significant thing with this cemetery is that it is different from American cemeteries and well worth the visit. Some very famous people are buried here that we famous during the WWII period. This includes Paula Hitler Adolph's sister although the name on the post is different he remains are there. Also Deitrich Eckhardt is buried here. He is the man credited with helping form the beginnings of Hitlers thoughts and was a strong anti-Semite. For a quick stroll, you will find some other interesting names if you know your history. Doing research first can help in understanding this cemetery

Visited to find the grave of Toni Kurz who tragically died while attempting a climb of the North face of the Eiger in 1936.
Also saw the grave of Dietrich Eckart who was Hitler"s mentor in the 1920's.

I love Berchtesgaden. I am a history buff and this area is steeped in history and beauty. This cemetery is very well kept by the families. It has military personel from WW1 and WW2. I had a peaceful time reading headstones and plackards, i would suggest this cemetery to anyone visiting this area.

Having visited Allied World War 1 and 2 cemeteries in France and Belgium i found this interesting, the one long wall with plaques of soldiers who never returned home, also their photo's made it more moving. Also astounded the numbers involved for such a small place, thought provoking, also families who suffered in both wars. Another grave of interest to me Anton Adner, who died aged 112. Nice spot to see on a night as graves are adorned with little candles.

German cemeteries tend to be charming places - with lots of different themes on the stones. I like to look at the photos often placed in the stone, admire the flowers or other décor maintained on the gravesites. One of the walls holds a series of plaques in remembrance of soldiers who died during one of the world wars... many died far away in Russia, Italy, Hungary or the Ukraine. We were told later that men from the Alps areas were generally sent to the mountainous Eastern fronts since they (the men) were acclimated to higher altitudes. A quiet place to ponder the foolishness of humanity's actions. Right next to the Berchesgarten Tourist Information Center.
