just below the well known castles is another beautiful jewell that you should not miss. It is a lake amidst the woods and mountains of southern bavaria, and one of the most romantic hidden locations you can probably find. There is a path that allows you to walk all around this beautiful lake and gives you different perspectives to the castles and the scenery around. At any time of the year and during any season you should not pass on that hike of roughly 75 minutes! Take your time and explore beautiful nature at its best

Alpsee is a beautiful spot for a short and easy hike. During the hike, you will walk within a forest and right next to the lake “Alpsee” – and always with the Neuschwanstein castle in the horizon! An atmosphere like in a movie!

An insider tip for hobby photographers. Make sure to take a telephoto lens with you. Directly on the opposite side of the starting point (parking spots) is a wonderful place to take pictures. With the telephoto lens, you will be able to catch the beautiful mountain landscape, castle Hohenschwangau and even castle Neuschwanstein.

All in all, Alpsee is a wonderful spot to end a day and maybe even to see the sunset there. If you are looking for a romantic spot or if you just want to end the day with your family in a relaxing atmosphere, this will be the place. Take some snacks with you and go for picking there, you will love it!

We chose not to tour inside the castles but instead go to the Alpsee lake. The water is just stunningly beautiful and there is an area at the entrance where you can hang out and go swimming. In June the water was perfect (though I'm from Canada) and many adults and children were swimming. You can rent boats nearby and there are areas for shade. Just 100m away is access to food, ice cream, biergartens and there is a lovely walk around the premises.

Pack a picnic, have a swim and take in the scenery,

The employee working the dock was incredibly rude and gave us no information about a time to be back or operating the boats before pushing us off. When we arrived back exactly 35 minutes later due to misjudging the time it took us to pedal back to the dock we were charged another €20 for being “more than 10 minutes overdue”. For 6 people it cost €50 total for 35 minutes in boats. Overpriced and incredibly bad customer service. Avoid rental here if at all possible.

The parking lot is at Hohenschwangau Castle, where you park if you want to enjoy the view from the MarienbrĂĽcke. At the end of the parking lot, away from the tourist crowds, is the Alpsee.
The circumnavigation takes about 1.5-2 hours.

A beautiful lake. From the front you have the Alps in the background, at the other end of the lake you have a view of the two fairytale castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. A telephoto lens is recommended for taking pictures of the two castles. And nice weather with sunshine. Then the water of the lake comes into its own.

The circumnavigation is pleasant. However, they are not suitable for bicycles (not even mountain bikes) or prams. On one side of the lake it goes up the mountain, without wide walking paths.

In addition to the overcrowded MarienbrĂĽcke, or the castles, this walk is ideal. It is relaxing to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature during a walk around the Alpsee, with great photo opportunities

Prior to our visit to the area, we read a lot about hikes near the castles. Alpsee was always at the top of the list with a warning that it is very busy. On our visit, we waited for the tour busses to leave for the day and we nearly had the trai to ourselves for a late afternoon run. Perfect way to enjoy the scenery

We stopped by before leaving the area after going up Neuschwanstein castle. The lake is huge and it looked quite nice from the scenic areas up the castle. It was winter so there was no one in there except the ducks. There were quite a few of them swimming around. The view looking out the lake was quite nice and tranquil.

Magnificent walk around the emerald-colored lake. View of the mountains and the two castles. Many benches. Lots of places to “take a dip” (toe tips are cold in April). Paths accessible to strollers. Shady. Very quiet in the morning before 10 a.m., then busier. Ideal, however, to escape the frenzy of the village center invaded by groups of tourists, who do not come all the way here.

Reaching here on public transport is hassle free and easy. Only gripe about this good place is that we did not get to enjoy at the restaurant that has killer views.

This lake is beautiful and an added bonus when visiting Neuschwanstein castle. I could not see a path around the outside, but it is a very good place to take pictures.
