I decided to stop by here thinking I would do a quick tour of the Palace and leave after two or three hours. I wasn't expecting much due to the season, however I imagine the attraction really only holds up due to natural beauty. Building is nothing worth looking at, and not even the fountains were on.

It was a LONG wait for the tour, the wait was longer than the tour itself, which is often a bad sign in my book. Furthermore the ferry schedule isn't great. Lots of time spent waiting as there wasn't much reason to walk around.

Do not go here in the Winter. The tour is not worth it. In the summer, maybe but be prepared to spend half a day minimum.

Beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. We took the train from Munich to Prien am Chiemsee (45 minutes, Bayern Ticket) and then walked from the station to the lake. In summer you can take an old-school train there.

We bought at boat round-trip for 8,50€ which enabled us to see both the Herreninsel and Fraueninsel. On the Herreninsel you can go and see a beautiful castle and also just go for a nice walk. We spent about 1 hour there before getting on the boat again which took us to the Fraueninsel. This island has a hlittle village and is also worth the trip.

Even at this time if the year I would absolutely recommend visiting the Chiemsee.

This lake is great to spend whole day, especially during nice days. U can take a boat and visit each stop, for example Schloss Herrenchiemsee and then just continue to walk around. For can play your day and see timetable visit this page: http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/files/chiemseeschifffahrt/fahrplan02.pdf.

Chiemsee offers excellent infrastructure for biking. Bike rentals are plentiful available ( I rented a mountain bike at the Segelschule at the Hofanger bathing grounds in Gstad for 10e full day). many cafes and restaurants all around the lake.

There is a bike track all around the lake, some 50 to 60km total depending on choice of route variants. It took me 51km and 2h30min for a sporty almost non-stop ride around the lake.

The tourist office offers a free map of the whole lake, which has been good enough for me. Signposting of the bike track is mostly ok, but a map is needed.

However for a more leisurely and shorter ride than my biking exercise , my recommendation is to skip the southern part of the lake between Prien and Chieming, because it is the least interesting part of the loop. Long sections of the bike path run next to the Munich - Salzburg Autobahn.

Spend more time cycling the northern part Chieming - Seebruck - Gstaad - Prien. Chieming - Seebruck and Gstaad Prien sections offer the nicest bike tracks away from cars, next to the lake, often in the forest offering some protection from the sun on a hot day.

Passenger ferries on Chiemsee lake transport bikes. This offers a convenient option how to get back from Chieming to Prien or in opposite direction.

We took a train to Prien am Chiemsee from where we were staying in Bavaria. So much to do here we will need to come back. There are a number of islands on the lake and you can take a boat to them. One of the boats is a paddle steamer. You can also hire a boat on the lake. For those who want a little extra and don't want to or can't walk you can take the little train that goes from the main railway station down to the lakeside. Well worth a day, or couple of days here. So much to do and see.

We came off the motorway to cool down at the lake. Cheap to park, beach area with showers, volley ball and football, children's play area and pontoon with slides and inflatable ice berg. Clean changing facilities and lockers and a very nice bar with food. Came back and did boat trip another day, not so good, no facilities on boat and confusing time table. But the lake was well worth it.

Lake Chiemsee is really big. One round of it is approx. 60 kms with a good picturesque view from all the sides.
I was here in April-2018 & it was worth spending the Sunday there.
Traveled by car & there are a lot of options for parking.
One should venture to this place on sunny days because thats when it can be enjoyed to the fullest.
To take with you - cap, short pants, t-shirts, floaters & good camera..
there are a lot of options to go to the central Island which is either by ferry, paddle boat, normal rowing boat or a motor boat.. All of them are available for rent but it depends on the availability & your time of reaching to the place. Its recommended to be there early so that enough options are available.

The Fraueninsel which is the main Island is very beautiful. One should not miss to have a walk around this island which doesnt take more than 30 min. This island is Auto free zone so no cars or motorbikes are allowed..
There are two types of restaurants available.. one is the normal one where one can sit & eat.
The other one is a take away one where you can get sandwiches (with fresh lake fish) & beers & can sit outside to eat..

Its a place for a perfect day trip for family & friends..

The “Bavarian Sea” as people call the Chiemsee in Bavaria is a great place to visit. The tickets for the boat rides are not expensive at all. You need to follow 2 rules, 1. Be there early, 2. Don’t come on weekends. If you follow those 2 rules, you avoid long queues and waiting times.

Go by boat to the Herreninsel where the Bavarian “Versailles Palace” is located. You can reach the palace by foot (it’s simple and easy walk) or with a horse carriage. They do tours there to visit the palace. Its and amazing place with an interesting history. Unfortunately, King Ludwig II. never finished his palace but you must see it!!! The garden, the inside of the palace are wonderful.

The second visit is the Fraueninsel. A small island not far from the Herreninsel. Walk around the island, there are many little shops were you can buy all sorts of souvenirs, local art, books and and and… its worth to go around the whole island and to discover the area. You should visit the chapel… it’s a mysteries place. You can breathe the history there. My advice when you go for lunch: don’t go to the big restaurants. You can find many little private garden restaurant were fresh smoked fish is served or local snacks. Those restaurant are just amazing.

My last advice: don’t miss the last boat and in case you do… they have romantic places to stay there.

A friend and I rented a bike near the train station at Priem a Chiemsee and then rode around the Lake with a few deliberate and inadvertent detours. All up the ride was about 65kms. We really enjoyed it. The route(s) takes you through pretty villages, beach tracks, through woods, past farmland, and alongside and on roads. The lake is ever present. I've ridden in lots of different places and would rate this one as my favourite to date. There are a few different rental shops: I'd suggest visiting the Tourist Information Centre in Priem and asking for a brochure which lists them. The one in Priem was handy for us as we were on a day trip by train from Munich.

Explaining in detail how great everything is would take too long and it can be found on Chiemsee website anyway. So I'll just write down a few tips:

1. Visit in the period from May to October. Then you'll get to visit the Herrenchimsee gardens in all their majesty (fountains included). Also, taking a guided tour of the castle is a must.

2. Visit both the Herrenchiemsee (most famous for its castle) and the Frauenchiemsee (famous for its monastery). Especially visit the small tourist shop on the Frauenchiemsee, where they sell local specialties, including fine liquors brewed on the island (by the nuns, no less).

3. Even if you visit during the winter, go for an evening walk along the misty shore of the Frauenchiemsee and savour the out-of-time experience. Gives you the shivers.

All in all, enjoy this "Bavarian all-in-one" experience.
