Unique historic cable car connecting the romantic Waldfriedhof (Forest Cemetery) to the rest of the modern world. If your German is good enough, talk to the guy at the wheel and read the plaques inside the cars. If not, have someone translate them for you. It's fun!

Interesting train, just okay
May 2020 • Couples
This was our first visit to Standseilbahn. Overall, it was just okay—the train is cool, but there’s not much at the top besides a cemetery, a small beer garden and a few trails. If you want to go for a hike, I’d recommend you make seeing the Standseilbahn as part of your trek, but I wouldn’t go just for that. It’s about a 4-minute ride, but, unfortunately, you can’t see much because of the trees. Again, an interesting site, but don’t make it the focus of your day.

Authentic, original, old-world travel

Although there are only two stations (beginning & end), the Seilbahn is a gem that harkens back to times past. The steep climb up to the park and cemetery provides views of the surrounding neighborhood. Such a cool way to explore another tucked away section of Stuttgart.

this is a truly lovely old machine to ride on there isn't a lot at the top of the hill it climbs a cemetery and a short walk away a couple of garden centres and a restaurant but it is very pretty and green up the top of the hill

but the vernacular is worth the effort to ride on its a lovely old thing

A fun ride with friendly staff, but not much more.

If you’re a fan of the funicular, add a star as the cars are traditional (complete with a cedar chest scent), and the cable system is visible at both ends thanks to strategically placed windows. Otherwise, unless you plan on visiting the cemeteries, hiking on the two posted trails, or visiting the Biergarten (which was closed when I arrived) there’s not much to do but ride back down.

Enjoy 4 minute

although it is a short journey of 4 minutes on average, it is a very enjoyable thing to make up of old wooden wagons.

Nice piece of history

Take a nice ride through the woods of Stuttgart with this super old cable-train. Recommended to take a walk through the Sttugart woods and hills.

quick, cheap historical ride

Because the Standseilbahn is part of the transit system, a day ticket or other pass will cover this. This is a similar setup to the Funiculars in Barcelona. There are two cars that depart at about the same time on a single track and pass on a short double track section in the middle. It's a real trip back in time - the cars are well maintained and have old original signs in the interior. There's not too much that would lead to sensory overload at the top, but you can take a nice walk, and get to a beer garden down the road a ways and reward yourself with a cold beer before heading back.

'Rack' Railway

Our tourist travel ticket covered us to ride this old and well maintained funicular. Carriages are lovely. Nothing much when you get to the top though - a flower shop & garden centre are the only attractions. None the less worth a visit if you like rail history.

Well worth the effort

This is clearly something that few people take the time to find as when we visited there was only us taking the rice up to the top. Worth it just for the trip on the old wooden carriages and it is part of the city transport network so free to ride if you have a day (or longer) ticket
