technical effects and some unfriendly employees
Aug 2019
A lot of television screens. You might like this, if you are easily impressed by technical effects. It surely has a certain kind of flair - but it wasn't the kind of flair I like.

What made me remove another star is the behaviour of some of the employees. Still yawning at 10:30 am some of them seem to be annoyed by visitors. Others would rather like to sit in a dark corner with their notebook or tablet and not be disturbed.

Great museum!

The museum is a contemporary art museum which exhibits different expositions at the same time.
The expostions vary greatly, but all are in connection to technology and/or visual arts .
I've found some excellent artpieces and enjoyed the interactivity there was between visitor and a lot of artworks.

Depending on the exhibition the museum is also very childfriendly.

What i also like is that the museum has a free entry policy, every Friday starting from 2 PM.

Overal a very recommendable visit. And a must to for any tech head or contemporary art fan.

Great experience

The ZKM is a former ammunition factory 3 storey tall. It is converted into a set of 6 museums in interesting fashion. Due to limited time we saw the code museum. It has facial recognition, bitcoin production and a robot which writes legal documents. It’s a very interesting experience where history and sociology catch up with technology.

'Open Codes' until 5 August 2018

A mind-bending experience! The free booklet, 'Living in Digital Worlds', looks like a good read. Don't worry about what the experience is about - if you can spare an hour, go! There's no entrance charge. A couple of moans: the outside signage to the main entrance of ZKM is poor, and you need to look hard for the German / English-language notes (in quite small print) for each display in 'Open Codes' since some are at knee-height and some at chest-height; only a few are at eye-level! Why? Anyway, worth a detour.

Not for the average tourist.

Certainly not my cup of tea. First of all, I didn't understand what this place actually was, an art museum, a social club, a workshop? Some reviews call it the German Centre Pompidou. There is some similarity in the architecture of the building, but nothing else. At the moment there is a special photographic feminist exhibition which is rather interesting. Apart from that I was totally lost as to what everyone else was in the building for. It was full of people gathered in small groups having classes or discussions. It's not for everyone and it would be better that a better explanation about the place is provided to potential visitors.

Always amazing

One of my favourite galleries in the world. This is a really massive space so if you look at the website and like all of the exhibitions, it needs a day to see it all. Exhibitions cover the crossover between IT, communications, art and geography, so there's more to interest people not that engaged by art. Computer enthusiasts, gamers, those interested in world politics, the Internet and cybernetics, would all find something of value. Karlsruhe also now provides overall free city wifi. There is an excellent cafe in the main hall as well as a bookshop with lots of rare publications, both traditional and electronic. Since discovering it I have visited from Australia at least once a year.

Just great

We have been there a few times but the variety of shows is always great. ZKM offers such a diverse mixture of media and installations, as you can hardly see somewhere nearby.

Great place for media/digital fans - nothing special for regular tourists
Jun 2017 • Solo
ZKM is rated one of the best places in Europe for digital media. For the average tourist, it has not much to offer. Located in a refurbished huge industry complex, the architecture is worth a 15 min walk from downtown. There is however no permanent mainstream exhibition - except you're a fan of specific digital media art forms or want to meet art/design students.
