    Lovely start to an afternoon
Fantastic view of Heidelberg and the whole valley as it was a beautiful sunny day. It takes quite a time to get to the top on Funicular railway having to change half way up from a modern one to an older smaller one. We were fortunate that we didn't have to wait too long in between changing, but can imagine at the height of the tourist season that would be quite different. On the way down we got off at the Chateau stop and spent a couple of hours there and then took the train down afterwards to the station. Not a particularly cheap experience at €14 per person but we were not perturbed. You can get food and drinks at each stop on the line if you have the time and inclination to do so. There is the option of getting to the top by foot haha! , car or bus which is cheaper of course than the railway.

    Poor Views, Good Walks
There are 3 ways up to here, by car, by the Bergbahn train from the Altstadt, or by number 39 bus from Bismarkplatz. The latter leaves every hour and takes about 20 minutes, passing through a variety of countryside and costing much less than the train. At the top is a hotel, restaurant and cafe, with views from the terrace out to distant areas, Heidelberg itself being obscured by trees. Hang-gliders launch from just below. There is a falconry with 2 shows a day and a childrens Paradise play area. Around the whole area there are a lots of walks, although the waymarking is variable and not in line with the map we were given. Some of the walks have a series of play areas for children.

    Very good view of Heidelberg
I visited the King's Throne during my stay at Heidelberg, the view is astounding. If you have time to make a 40 minutes tour, it is a good place to visit, but if you are short of time, the only thing that you can do up here is taking great photos of the city.

We visited the Koningstuhl on a cloudy and windy day. Therefore there was not a great view and it was very windy and cold. We payed quite a lot of money to take the mountain train up to the top which was quite amusing, but we were rather disappointed by the view. Maybe it is much more worth it when the weather is good!

You have to take two funiculars to get here, whose schedules aren't exactly in sync and there are big lines. We spent 1 hour waiting/riding funiculars for a view that only needs 15 seconds to see. Other than the view, there's a souvenir shop and a small cafe, neither of which are unique or different from any of the other 1,000 souvenir shops and small cafes in Heidelberg. I'd recommend skipping unless you have tons of time in Heidelberg.

You can take two funiculars to arrive at this point, but because you have to change halfway into a small and very slow train, waiting times were long, around 1 hour. When you get to the top, you see a part of the city, but frankly it is nog an amazing view, and there is not much else to do or see, so it is not worth the trouble. Waiting times to go down again, plus the slow ride: a total of at least two hours for one mediocre view...

You have to change from the lower to the upper funicular railway to go all the way up to Konigstuhl. I think the upper funicular is the oldest in Germany, it moves really slowly and all doors have to be opened and closed manually. The ticket price including return trips on the lower and upper funicular and Heidelberg castle visit cost 12 euros, while the lower funicular and castle cost 7 euros. Considering the very limited views at the top (the views at the castle itself are way better than Konigstuhl, believe me), I recommend you skipping the upper funicular. The was no view at all while going up and down the upper funicular, and it moved so slowly it got really boring. There's nothing to do on top, no proper viewing platform, views blocked mostly by trees, and the falcon breeding station was closed for some unknown reason.

If you like outdoors and sports, I strongly recommend you to take the "Himmelsleiter" (the ladder to heaven). A very very steep stone stairs surrounded by deep woods. Its like walking in medieval ages, being able to be in touch with wild nature. The steps are so steep its quite a challenge. 20 minutes going up on an old stone stairs. Once you get to the top, the breath taking panoramic view is a great reward.

The Königsstuhl has just the right size to make for a nice afternoon walk, starting from the picturesque old town of Heidelberg, past the castle ruins towering over the river Neckar and up the hill using the "Himmelsleiter" (Stairway to Heaven), an old, somewhat irregular stairway made from rocks which goes straight up. For less adventurous hikers, there are several less steep and taxing routes to walk up the Königsstuhl, or you can enjoy the view from the funiculair instead if you wish to travel in comfort.

From the top, you can enjoy the stunning view of the surrounding hills, Heidelberg and the Neckar valley - a view that is definitely worth the climb. Depending on your fitness level, I would estimate that walking up the stairs takes between and 45 and 75 minutes. On the top, there is a little shop where you can buy drinks and snacks, a falconry which offers shows, a small fairy tale-themed amusement park for kids and several observatories.

As the stairs are made from irregular blocks of rock and some of them can be quite high, a certain sense of balance and at least a medium level of fitness is required, and I would recommend to wear proper shoes.

The view from here is kind of a prize after a tiring but very cool hike or bike ride. Alternatively taking the cable car to konigstuhl is a very nice experience.
Alternatively, you can take the bus number 39 from bismarkplatz.

Enjoy the amazing view of Heidelberg and its spectacular. If you feel a bit sporty can trek up from the Heidelberg castle and enjoy the hidden trails with some great viewpoints as well. Its beautiful and its nature at its best. If not you can also take the funicular up and enjoy the ride up.

if you have time you can go for a stroll into the forrest. Many trails are directly starting from Heidelberg downtown right behind the castle..
At the top there is a old restaurant with a kios, you can reach it via the funicular.
But the highlight is the forrest and the hidden trails and sights to the valley. If you are lucky you see forrest pigs, deer or eagles.
I recommend the trails from downtown or the peak of the Königstuhl to Hohler Kästenbaum, Kohlhof (has a nice restaurant) and back.

Nice travel to the hill top by an antique tram. The view from the hill is excellent. There is a very small tram museum in the top tram station, which is well appointed and interesting. After you visit the Heidelberg castle it is very convenient to take the tram up.
