If you are visiting the castle, you will probably walk through this square. It’s only a small square and is just a minute or two away from the castle’s funicular station. What makes this square worth visiting is that you get a beautiful view of the castle, looming over it. The castle sits right behind and above the square so it is very picturesque and makes a perfect photo. The day we were there, it was lively and packed with traditional food stalls and an orchestra but this was a special occasion. Normally, I’d imagine that it is fairly quiet. The only other feature is an attractive central statue of the Madonna, with a gleaming golden halo that fans out like the rays of the sun. It was set up in 1718 by the Jesuits at a time when the Counter-Reformation was threatening Catholic faith in Heidelberg.
