The “Fischbrunnen” or fountain, which stands in the northwest corner of Münsterplatz in front of the Kornhaus, is the oldest and most magnificent fountain in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau.
The Fischbrunnen was built on the site of a fountain first mentioned into the year 1446 in the year 1483 by the otherwise unspecified stonemason Hans von Basel at the intersection of the “Salzstrasse” with the today's “Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse”, which was then called “Große Gass”. At this intersection, the historical routes from north to south and from east to west met and formed the center of the city. This fountain was one of the locations of public wells for drinking water already taken into account in urban planning, as was the Georgsbrunnen on Münsterplatz and the fountains at Oberlinden and Unterlinden.

Fischbrunnen is a small monument and fountain at the square in front of the cathedral that can be easily missed, especially, if merchants come with their tents and goods.

A couple of hundred years ago the fish to be sold on the market was kept in this basin. Therefore its name which menas fish-fountain. Nowadays it is an nice place to sit and view the goings-on on the Münsterplatz.
Just in case you need some water to drink or wash the fruit you might have bought on the market: Alle the water-fountains in Freiburg have drinkeable water unless it says "Kein Trinkwasser" (which are very few, actually.)

It stands right in the middle of the intersection. Belongs to the old historic Freiburg. Beautiful enough to get close and look at the sculptures on it.

This is not something special and it is not in anywhere else. Just in the Markethalle (Münsterplatz) and you will see eventually. Sweet.

Anybody that loves history and old buildings, must visit the old part of Freiburg. There is so much to see in this area - which mixes with the modern but is not overshadowed by the modern buildings and shops closeby

At this crossroads, the historical routes from north to south and from east to west met and formed the center of the city. The fish fountain was used during the daily market hours as Marktbrunnen and served the fish sale: to be sold fish were set by the dealers in a trough into the well. The architectural elements were in 1914 replaced by copies, the originals are kept in the Münsterbauhütte, the central part was in 1951 the Augustinian Museum.

In 1970 he was re-erected on the 850th anniversary of the city to its present location in the cathedral square in front of the granary.

The statues in the lower part of the stand provide the city patrons are: Our Lady with Child, hl.Lambertus and hl. Georg with the Freiburg Coat of Arms; St. Leopold holds the leading Austrian shield. In the upper part is the Latin Church Fathers: Pope Gregory the Great, the cardinal and the bishops Hieronymus Ambrose and Augustine.

This Gothic fountain located at he North West of the Freiburg Cathedral id quite attractive. It's one of the oldest fountains in Freiburg. I certainly enjoyed the art work in that fountain. So delicately chiseled. It was built in 1486 by Hans from Basel. Even after more than 529 years, it attracts still tourists and it certainly deserves at least one picture as a souvenir.

This is a beautiful fountain in the middle of the plaza. Very impressive, and definitely worth the photo op. My family enjoyed seeing this. The overall plaza was definitely worth the trip.
