Though not the biggest of museums, it holds enough pieces and historic information to be worth a visit. The building has been beautifully restored/refurbished over the last couple of years, and it's been wellworth it. Added bonus: it's air conditioned ;-)

There is a lot of medieval and renaissance statuary in this museum, a good deal of it originating in the cathedral, as well as stained glass and paintings. The explanations are very helpful, even if you don’t read German. One floor holds a number of...More

Excellent transformation of the old monastary chapel into a modern museum. Lots of original stained glass windows and statues from the Cathedral - Take a day pass for 3 museums (substantial reduction)

Next to the Freiburg I would say this is the next must see attraction. Even if you are not religious, you would appreciate the beauty of the paintings, stained glass, sculptures, and architectural artefacts housed here. The added attraction is that the museum building was...More

We were fortunate to visit during an exhibition of 100 of Rembrandt's etchings. The explanations of each work in its context were superb. The main part of the Augustiner museum was very impressive, from the original Munster statues housed here to protect them, to medieval...More

We enjoyed about an hour or two reading about the history of the cathedral and its architectural integrity..... or lack there of! The museum is also filled with beautiful time pieces and measurement tools from hundreds of years ago. Simply fascinating! We were also able...More

We visited during an exhibition of Freiburg under the Nazi regime and it was well worth a visit. It was both informative and not at all didactic.

This is an amazing museum. The works are so well displayed and it blew us away. One of the best small musuems we have ever been to.A must-see, if, like us, you enjoy medieval art.

This statue is of Christ on a donkey and was mounted on a cart to be used in a Palm Sunday celebration. It is quite old, and quite striking. There is a picture of it that can be found by searching for Augustinermuseum... More

Is one day enough for visiting the city plus Schauinsland? (3 Replies)
We're planning for a weekend trip to Freiburg next week. Flixbus can take us there by 11:00 and leave at 19:30 the latest. I would like to know, would it be reasonable to expect to visit the main attractions in the city itself, plus the Schauinsland viewpoint? If the time is a bit too rushed, we might spend a night there, but we'd prefer not to. From what I see, the sights in Freiburg are mainly the Münster, the city gates, the Augustinermuseum etc. There are natural attractions such as...More

I'm planning a similar itinerary, and answers here Will be useful for me also... Actually I'm thinking to get off from Strasbourg early morning, to Offenbourg, take the Black Forest Railway, passing through Villingen and stop in Titisee. Visit the site, eat something and down by train through Hollentall to Freiburg. I'll arrive in the city around 2 pm. I don't think that I have time to go to Schauinsland, so I'll stay in the city. But maybe If I skip Titisee and go directly from...More
