The Bächle (gutters) in Freiburg’s old city are a touch of genious. For hundred of years they have washed rubbish and filth away - today they work as a mecanical water cooling system in the streets. On hot summer days they turn the heavy air fresh and pleasant.

I believe that I can say that the Bächle is one of Freiburg's icons. These little water runnels are all over the old city and part of it's history. They say that if you accidentally step in it, you'll marry a Freiburger!

In summer, when it is usually filled with water, people dip their feet to cool down. Some even sit around it while having drinks and cooling their feet. Kids love them too! There are even little boats for sale and kids play with it in the water.

Rivulets that cool the town in the heat of Summer, and in the Winter make you think of the relentless passing of time. Fascinating architectural phenomenon, almost fairy tale like in ambiance. I fell in and I married a Local so the legend must be true!
Charming historical feature that encourages the mind to think of times gone by.

It's water. H2O. Aqua. Most probably it's not drinking water. Fall into it and you will marry a local.

The Bächle is water stream that you can see around the old town and is not only very pleasant to see but creates a sense of peace and has a recreational function for children with imagination. Definitely one of the most unique n interesting landmarks of this old town.

Water flows free in the streets but when you need a glass of water to drink you have to pay in Germany. This really felt strange as in my country a glass of water is always free

The little brooks which are found running through a number of streets are charming, but remember to watch where you're walking! Turned ankles hurt in any language, and worse, you could take a spill.

The town center is laced with cute miniature canals named Bachle. These "stream-lets" translates, have been running down nearly every street since the 13th century. Originally they were designed to keep fires from spreading (they could be quickly dammed to flood the street). And they did the job - Freiburg had no major fires after in introduce its Bachle.
These days, Freiburg's trademark canals are just fun: a sunny day turns any kid-at-heart into a puddle-jumper. By tradition, we threw a few cents into this stream, but soon we learned that Freiburg still employs two "Bachleputzer" to scrub the canals clean each day with steel brooms. Local lore says that if you fall into a Bachle, you are destined to marry a Freiburger.

This was part of the towns canalization and once that was no longer needed, it ensured that the town was kept cool. But during my recent visit there was no water flowing. I hope this is only temporary.

The Bachle are small canals running along every nearly every street in the Freiburg "Altstadt." These small channels continually flow water a few inches in depth and on a nice summer day you see many children towing small boats on strings along these miniature waterways. It just adds a real nice touch to a very nice city..
