We came by here by coincidence, it is a short walk from the city center. If you are respectful and the mass is not very full you can attend it. Very different from what we are used seeing. Very uplifting and beautiful.

Ever since Princess Louise of Baden got married to the future Russian Tsar Alexander I. - at the instigation of his grandmother, Empress Catherine the Great, Russia has been present in the spa town of Baden-Baden, especially during the 19th century. Many famous Russian writers have spent time here as well, often too much in the casino. Thus Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoyevsky have connections to this town. And today the Russians are back again, as one can easily hear in the streets. Besides the Fabergé Museum, opened a few years ago, with works of the famous Russian jeweller, the other monument to Russia in town is the Orthodox Church on the Lichtentaler Strasse (not to be confounded with the Lichtentaler Allee). Not missing at this ecclesiastical building, which was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, is the typical gilded onion dome.

An interesting active church with historical significance. It is not downtown, but an easy 20 minute walk from the center.

It is not surprizing that this church is there because many of the visitors and indeed residents of the town are Russian, but if the exterior is attractive in the old Russian style, it is depressingly dull and dank inside, I have been to many Russian churches but this one was disappointing.
