We hiked from Oestrich to Geisenheim, which takes 5-6 hours. The path is well marked at the beginning, but somewhere around Schloss Johannisberg we got lost and had to ask for the way. Our German guidebook conceded that the paths were "partly unmarked" and this made us take wrong turns and double back on occasion. So you better use a... More

Having walked part of the Rheinburgenweg on the other side of the Rhine on previous visits to the Rhineland, I decided to try a bit of its right bank counterpart, the Rheinsteig. I spent two days walking from Johannisberg to Lorch. It was absolutely delightful, vineyards alternating with forest, and I can't wait to return to walk some more of... More

Walking along the Rheinsteig is a particularly pleasurable way to enjoy this beautiful corner of Germany. The paths are well maintained and clearly marked, and although some of the ascents are taxing, there are many rewarding viewpoints from which one can take in stunning panoramas of the river, picturesque villages, and various passenger and freight vessels navigating this iconic waterway.... We finished the stage from the Loreley to Kaub three years ago, and did the next stage from Kaub on this year. The first stage is longer and more difficult than the second stage. The second stage is only 9 miles long. Any hiking over slate which can be slippery during the rain, is well secured with hand rails. Wine stands... More
