This was a lovely descent having visited the Roman theatre. Some really nice views over Lyon as you descend. Much more enjoyable on the way down rather than the way up!

This hill road used to be the only link between the Roman hill city and the riverside districts.
In the early14th century, Pope Clement V (the first Avignon Pope) was crowned in the upper town. On his way down, his party was partly buried under a falling wall. The Pope's tiara fell and a sizable diamond was lost... Some people are still looking for it today. I would advise travellers to walk downhill on their way from the Roman theatres of Fourvière and stop in one of the many "bouchons" at the bottom of the hill for a drink !
