The fountain is topped by a massive sculpture by Bartholdi, he of Statue of Liberty and Lion de Belfort fame. Very imposing. It is off to the side of the square, so, although, massive, it gets a little lost.
This statue is beautiful and complex. It offers a full range of photographic opportunities if you are so inclined. And different times of day present even more complexity. If you like photography, you can have fun with the Bartholdi Fountain.
This is a fantastic fountain, which I believe Lyon acquired from Bordeaux. Its great during the day but best viewed at night when the horses can be seen with steaming nostrils as they pull the chariot wildly across the Place Terreaux
