This is not an indoor museum - but murals on the walls on a dozen or so apartment buildings in one of Lyons neighbourhoods. You can easily come by tram nr.4.
There is a reception where you can check in and probably things to see there as well. However this was closed for vacation when we showed up. But no problem, they have a sign outside giving you the route to follow - so we had a lovely stroll around admiring the art.
Truly worth a visite - different from what you normally see as a tourist.

I saw this museum in the Lyon City Card guide... it just says it is an urban museum so as I like modern architecture I decided to go... what a surprise when I got there that instead of a usual indoor museum, the exhibits are in fact some 25 enormous mural paintings on the ends of housing blocks around the surrounding suburb! If you call at the museum office first you get a map and audio guide or book to take you round. It's a brilliant idea and really fascinating. I would highly recommend s it.

The Musée Urbain de Tony Garnier is essentially a series of 14 outdoor murals that depict Tony Garnier's vision of a Utopian city. The murals are on the sides of housing units, the only section of the plan that was ever built, so you take a short walk around a series of small apartment buildings and integrated parks to see them. A "Histo-guide" is available for 5€ at the museum address: it explains the murals/vision and the historical context for the housing (a huge leap forward in philosophy and quality.) Alternatively, there's a guided tour (fee) once a week which includes a visit to an apartment that has been faithfully restored to original appearance and contents. Check the museum listing for the time and be prompt! There are an additional 10 murals to see, sponsored by the museum. You It is accessible by public transportation and could be paired with a visit to the Lumiere Museum for proximity.

Never heard of Tony Garnier? well neither had we but seeing the listing for this attraction in a travel brochure picked up at the Lyon visitors centre we jumped on the number 4 tram and headed out to explore.
We misread the description and had expected a tour through some apartments designed by Mr Garnier, instead, after arriving at the museum front office, we found that there is indeed a tour, sadly for us only in French, and it's not of any designer apartments but of the whole residential "ideal city" complex.
There is a self guided tour available around the area with one of those personal listening devices, you know the ones, you hit number 4 ad they talk you through what you're looking at.
Very informative and quite different from what we had been expecting but still a very interesting look at urban design.
They do have an display apartment open but only later in the afternoon and at an extra cost of 3 euros each, after paying 5 euros each for the personal guides we skipped the apartment tour and satisfied our curiosity with the look around the housing estate.

On my search for paintings around the city, saw these murals. Nice to see the paintings beautifying ugly concrete walls. One of my favorites is the one with a class picture, where the photo was enlarged and each person was painted.

I didn't actually do the outside tour of the painted walls as currently there is a marvellous exhibition inside the museum building focusing on the electrically household gadgetry of the post-WWI era (runs until the end of 2014). It's not an enormous space or an exhaustive collection, but the way this has been put together is really enchanting, and at 5 euros entry it was an absolutely lovely, amusing way to spend an hour or so. The girl at the entry was very friendly and informative as well, which is always a bonus. I should probably mention that everything is in French, so that can be an issue. Not sure if any English translation was available as I didn't personally need it. Perhaps they don't expect foreigners to be interested?

Another out of the center destination is the Concept neighborhood Garnier created in the early 1920-30's. He created several of this type of city or community. Some were actually realized. The walking tour of the murals relating to Tony Garnier covers a good area so bring comfortable shoes. The read along booklet available at the Museum proper is very good. (Free w/ Lyon City Card).

I spent around 1 hour walking around this neighborhood to check out all 20+ (I guess residential) buildings with such wall paintings, in a beautiful morning. I have never seen or heard before of such a place.
Totally worth it for architecture and design lovers.
It's good it's still off the beaten tracks.

We have been to this outdoor museum more than ten times with our quests. Tony Garnier is really an architect with a vision. Here people could admire his Lyon blue prints and the ones which are constructed later in the city. Moreover, there are some more murals from several artists of other countries to present their ideal cities. This place is full of the historical meaning to the people of Lyon. It takes about one hour
