We were on a walking tour of Vieux Lyon (Context Travel) when our guide took us by Soierie Saint-Gorges. Our guide, apparently, has a working relationship with the shop owner since he let us walk through the front display area to the back room of the shop where the old silk looms and other machines were set up. Soierie Saint-Gorges is reportedly one of the last active weaving workshops in the old town of Lyon. The shop's owner came back and quickly explained how all the machines and looms worked for the process of weaving silk. It was very interesting and informative. I would have never guessed that in the 15th century, when the King of France declared that Lyon was the official silk center of France, census records indicate that there were 14,777 silk looms and 5,832 silk workshops located in Lyon. The shop also has some great items in the front display area for sale. My granddaughter bought a scarf to take home to her mother. It's a ten-minute walk from Place Bellecour.

We stayed in the neighborhood, we had the address, and it still took us 3 days to find it. It's the back room of the silk STORE, with silk ties and scarves in the window. The museum has looms, bobbins, pattern books, and old fabrics.

This family-run business is a great place to visit right in the heart of Vieux Lyon (on Place de la Trinite) for a potted history of the silk industry in Lyon, and for access to beautiful Lyonnaise silk scarves. You can see the looms on which silk has been woven. I found this a friendly place.

Beware Scam!

I bought a scarf in this shop supposedly woven in Lyon.
But I found the same one on Ali Express.
A well-orchestrated deception that must bring in big returns...it's just a question of resellers pretending to be silky.
No scarves are produced by this store contrary to what you will be told.
To confuse the issue, we will tell you that it is made in our workshops, but it is just a matter of resale and for certain parts made in China!!
or how to take customers for fools!

This is part museum and part storefront focused on the historical silk industry that made Lyon what it is today. The silk scarves are all beautiful and reasonably priced. Definitely don't buy the made in China silk scarves that can be found in the more popular parts of old Lyon.

I had heard about Lyon being a major manufacturer or silk and was so happy to come across Soierie Saint-Georges and it’s 200 year history. Fabulous!

We were treated to a guided tour of this fascinating establishment which informed us about the art of silk weaving on looms which date back to the 19th century. The boutique had wonderful scarves to purchase—the hard part was choosing which one to buy! Here’s the one I finally chose.

I picked up a leaflet from my hotel offering a free silk scarf if you spent over 50€
So I bought a selection of scarves, one of which was free.
There is a loom at the back of the shop which you can take a look at and the owner and his son are very happy to explain about the weaving techniques in French and English!

We stumbled upon this silk weaving manufactory by chance. It is located in the St. Georges district in old Lyon and what a discovery, this was. Lyons´ few remaining silk weavers are here at work, still. It is a family business with a long tradition, we were told. Most beautiful silk scarves at reasonable prices to buy, and I got quite a few. You can visit the manufactory and it is worthwhile!

The colors and patterns of these glorious silks are exquisite and priced fairly, I think. I bought a small lavender-filled sachet to use when I travel. Watched a women in their workshop applying color to a piece on the loom and it was going to be lovely.
