In one of the largest mansions in the Old Town still allowing public access is a fine home for a wide-ranging and informative account of the great city.

From its days as capital of Gaul a couple of millennia ago to modern times history is conveyed via a plethora of artefacts.

Spread across the silk industry, industry, theatre and puppetry it is an engaging account.

Small but well architected history of Lyon, delivered in a clever manner with fictional recordings. Not filled with artifacts and paintings but helps complete the picture of this vibrant city's evolution. 45-hour is all you need

The museum was a somewhat selective historical review of Lyon. The items displayed were clearly individually very well prepared and some extremely impressive and overall quite interesting.

It claimed to chronologically review the city's history but three items should be noted:
. The English language auto guide did not match the relevant rooms number compared to its contents and this was confusing;
. A room and its successor did not necessarily follow a strict time line and appeared to reflect more items being found later and added to the next room, but it seemed that the displays reflected more the items available than the history and its importance. The displays appeared to concentrate too much on some times (because of the curators own interest or the availability of items) and ignore other long periods (that may not have been productive or significant - but see below); and
. The periods of the Two World Wars in the 1900's, especially the Second World War, were not well covered or even reviewed in any real context. The Period 1939 to 1945 appeared to not exist. Even if a very difficult period to explain and deal with, any historian who wished to provide a historical review would have provided details even if it was a display of both sides view in an unemotional basis.

As a consequence, with undoubtedly impressive and well prepared individual displays, I did not feel that the museum and its obvious high cost and maintenance expenses (plenty of guards etc) it did not leave me excited that I understood Lyon's history or a real feel for the nature of its people (even with the industrial and workers rights issues that were addressed well at times).

A great help in grasping the rich history of Lyon, covering significant time periods to almost present. The display drew me in so much that I bought a book on the subject at the bookshop afterwards.

this large and impressive building is down a back street in old lyon. lots to see, from paintings to furniture and more centered on local history of lyon through the centuries. the puppet museum in same building made us laugh and reminded us of our childhood! theres a very nice terrace cafe too.

We came for the puppet museum and stayed for the history museum! The puppet museum is very interesting and has lots of different kinds of puppets. Some were a little spooky to my 3.5 year old but he experienced it all. They had puppets for the kids to try and a mini stage that was fun.

The history museum was great. It has 30(!) rooms telling the history of Lyon from prehistoric days to the present day. In every other room, they had a children’s activity set up, in one room it was about crests and kids could create their crest. In another it was weaving patterns using plastic templates. The activity related to the objects in that gallery.

We spent two hours there in total between the two museums.

If you're wondering how Lyon got to where it is today, this is the museum for you! Lyon has a time-honored tradition of reinventing itself, and this exhibit takes you through these many reinventions. I particularly enjoyed learning that Lyon had a single mayor for 40 years! Can you imagine?

This is a good opportunity to learn about the history of Lyon. Furthermore the museum offers you a great look into the Renaissance house of a very rich family. There are also all kind of puppets from all over the world.

We ended up getting kicked out of the museum due to closing time. We didn't realize how many rooms they had so we lingered too long over the first dozen or so. The audio guide was great, and each room had a lot to see. It really covers the history of Lyon, with a lot of detail and visual aides so very interesting.

Not an original thought, but so true. This is part of the musées Gadagne. You can learn so much about Lyon history hear even if you do not speak French.
