About
The Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Renzo Piano, is located near the Tête d'Or park, at the Cité Internationale. From its creation, the museum has opted for an original acquistions policy of temporary exhibitions, developed in direct relation with the artists or from works in their collection.Whether for a Roller Coaster by the artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, a “Crying Wall” by Ann Hamilton, or a Salt Water Pool by Mathieu Briand, the museum transforms itself for each artistic project and thus offers a completely different visit every time. This means that the museum closes for short durations between each exhibition.

Recognizing that modern art is such a matter of individual taste, I would recommend this venue because you will find something you enjoy. It is well planned and there are surprises everywhere. And it’s cafe facing le Parc de Tete d’Or is a lovely little repose to relax.

I stopped in here because the outdoor art installations were very interesting to me. I only had 1 free day in Lyon so I opted to go to this museum based on what I had seen outside. When I went I found out that the day ticket actually was for the 3 locations that house the contemporary museum. Unfortunately there is no transportation between the 3 so given my time restrictions I was only able to see the mac Lyon site. I found the permanent exhibits to be interesting but sparse. I found some of the temporary exhibits to be very odd and not worth the designation of art. For me the highlight was the gift shop, lots of interesting and beautiful items.

Lyon's MAC is capable of both the best and the worst depending on exhibitions. This goes from truly inspiring and beautiful to absolute crap... I reckon this is art and therefore open to perception... "Beauty is in the eye of the observer" after all. Nevertheless in this particular museum I have found that a bit too often I end up disappointed.
My advice is to go there in case a particular show appeals to you and then give it a chance. I do on a regular basis myself after all as I am often in Lyon.

This is a great potential space for exhibitions, in a peaceful location about a 15 minute bus ride north of the city centre (C5 from Hotel de Ville). Visitors may want to check what is being exhibited before making the journey: some will find what is on offer fascinating, others indifferent. Currently one floor is devoted to modernist experimental music installations and associated items (eg David Tudor, Terry Riley) - a substantial offering that offers significant insight into the period especially from the 1950s to 70s when this was fashionable; the top floor has a 'work in progress' exhibition some of which is incomplete.

The exhibitions change every few months. Check that what's on 'now' appeals before setting off. This winter's soundscape installations, for example, may not be your thing. The café/restaurant however is perfectly placed for lunch before/after a walk in the Parc de la Tête d'Or across the road.

This type of artistic expression can only be understood by people with similar psychological issues. The whole collection feels like mad men were allowed to express themselves on the walls of this museum. It is simply depressing. This experience is not worth the €9 or your time.

Great place to escape the heat for a while. Three floors of exhibits, with the first floor apparently the internal collection, and the two higher floors for temporary exhibitions. I was especially impressed with Adel Abdessemed's work on the top floor, which is imposing, but also offers a lot of opportunities for exploration and contemplation. Right after exiting the museum there is a small cinema where they show a continuous loop of the construction of this piece, which is well worth watching for the full 16 minutes. Unfortunately, this exhibit seems to close on the 8th of July (2018) already.

The MAC of Lyon has temporary exhibitions on three stories. If you live in Lyon for a longer period, Carte Musée gets you one year access to six museums (MAC, Beaux Arts , ...) for the price of three admissions.

I love modern art but this museum is a scam. The ONLY thing exhibited was Yoko Ono's temporary exhibition. I personally did not like it and I do not consider this art. Every one can do these kind of installations. More importantly, they did not warn me at the ticket office that there is not any permanent collection. And I paid for this stupidity 9 euros. Shame on the museum!
