The Bellecour is the centerpiece of the city in many ways and the literal center. It holds the milepost 0 of the city - all distances are measured from that point.

Ringed by restaurants and the city tourist office, the Bellecour is plain and beautiful, sitting back from what is around it, filled with people at times enjoying being there.

Visited this lovely square in Lyon in July 2019. Easily accessed by the metro. Lots of shops and restaurants. Museums are located off the streets surrounding the plaza. It’s within maybe a 20 minute walk from the river and the start of Vieux Lyon.

Place Bellecour is a vast square. It is a huge open public space which is not really very interesting at first sight. Usually public spaces such as this would have some nice trees and flowers and some landscaped gardens perhaps. Not this one. There are some trees around the square, but the rest of it is just dirt or sand on the ground. There are a couple of large statues, one of which is that of a king. There is a branch of the Tourist Office and some other interesting sights. Also there are plenty of cafes and restaurants in the vicinity. Worth walking through it to get to other places.

Very much enjoyed our time people watching in this huge public park in central Lyon. Took a ride on the huge wheel (9E) and enjoyed amazing views from 10 storeys high. Visited this area 3 or 4 times during our stay.

I am exploring Lyon and will continue to do so till mid December 22. Lyon is such a beautiful city, well planned in every way you can think of. I am living in Belcour, the heart of this city. Living between the two rivers Rhône and Saone, I am enjoying my holidays with my family. The people in this city are extremely helpful. Though most are not conversant in English, one can do a lot with sign language. Translater on my phone was very useful and I keep using it whenever there’s a need. Shopping is a very happy experience. Hotelling is fun as you can find something you wish to eat . The electric scooter is a very convenient mode of transport. I have full admiration for the people of Lyon and wish to reciprocate if anyone reaches out to me in Pune.

Yes it’s a “place”, a square. What more? I do not really know. It’s enormous, rectangular, surrounded, as always in Lyon, by streets with many cars. I gave it a try but could not discover any charm, hidden gem, beauty.

Our visit to Lyon was very impressive. It’s the third largest city in France. We decided to stop over on our way to the airport for a return trip to Ireland. We got a pleasant surprise!

Lyon with its 2 million inhabitants is the biggest French city we have visited since Paris. A vibrant beautiful city filled with restaurants, craft workshops, museums and a very well preserved medieval city centre bound by two major rivers.

Lyon is the junction of where the Rhone and Saone rivers meet. (We are wintering on our boat on the Saone at Chalon.) This, from Roman times made the city a very important trading centre. It’s wealth comes from this trading culture and the founding and building up of the biggest silk industry in France. This has brought wealth to the city over the centuries and this is demonstrated through the large open squares and beautiful buildings of the old city and the modern city which has spread out from the banks of both rivers up into the hills overlooking the Rivers.

In twenty four hours we managed to fit in a ‘hop on hop off’ tour of the city, a walk around the island between the two rivers, lunch in the old town centre, a visit to a museum of miniatures and movie props and then the History of Lyon museum.

I have remarked on how some small French towns along the canals are dying with shops being forced to shut down, the post office only open for four hours a day three days a week. But then you visit Lyon and you see a thriving vibrant economy. Lyon has always been an independent innovative city. It did not support the French Revolution because at that time it was doing better than a lot of France and people already had a better quality of life.

I noticed is along the canals originally accumulated their wealth from the traffic on the canals and when that traffic switched to roads, unless the townspeople adjusted to the new economic reality quickly, they lost out. So rather than as I thought, it’s the French economy declining, what I was actually seeing was the effect of a permanent and fundamental structural change, as transport of goods shifted from canals to roads.

These types of changes have being going on since time began and when people cope well with change they prosper. So I learned more than just about Lyon during the visit. There is so much more to see and do in Lyon. We definitely will have to make a return visit.

One of our favourite places in the 2nd district of Lyon and often provides a haven of rest and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle in the shopping avenues and surrounding streets. Lots of seats are distributed around this huge sandy red square located right in the middle of the Presqu’île and city centre. So many public events take place here all during the year, including free concerts, an ice-rink in winter when the Ferris wheel is installed until March. We’ve attended chess competitions and book fairs here and it’s favourite demonstration and protest spot. a statue called the Veilleur de Pierre (Stone Watchman) stands at the corner of rue Gasparin, where a bomb was exploded by the French resistance in July 1944 – many memorial events still take place there. A statue of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the author of the Little Prince was erected in 2000, for the centenary of the de Saint-Exupery’s birth. The 5 metre high copper statue, showing the author and the Petit Prince, was created by a local sculptor, Christiane Guillaubey.
Nowadays, the locals use the formidable statue of the Sun King, Louis XIV, called The Bronze Horse, as a meeting, point under the horses’s tail, or “sous la queue du cheval”. A great place to people watch, in a braod space surrounded by elegant Napoleonic buildings with Fourvière, or the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière to give it its full title, looking down on everyone.

Here you can always make an appointment and not get lost. There are no large crowds of people even in the summer, there is a free working Wi-Fi (which is a rarity for Lyon) and small red stone under your feet are cool.

It may have been bad timing on our part but, while forming the centre point for much of Lyon's modern history, our visit simply revealed a rather large, barren square containing a statue of Louis 14th and a Ferris wheel
