About
The museum of Fine Arts of Lyon is the largest French museum outside of Paris, in terms of the richness of its collections, and the importance of the bequests received at its creation, in the wake of the Revolution. The ongoing enrichment of the collection and its dynamic artistic program place the museum on the international art scene. The museum is located place des Terreaux, in the heart of the city center, in a former 17th century Benedictine abbey. Its cloister is now home to a quiet garden featuring sculptures by Rodin and Bourdelle, among others. The museum’s encyclopedic collections are exhibited in five sections and seventy galleries presenting artworks from all the major civilizations and artistic schools, from Antiquity to the present day. All year long, the museum offers its visitors an exceptional tour of 5 000 years of art history and organizes major temporary exhibitions, as well as cultural activities engaging all audiences.

Not Impressed

We were disappointed in the Lyon Art Museum. The collection certainly is large, but we did not find much of the highest quality. Caveat: this is the opinion of a regular art museum visited, but certainly not a qualified critic.

Perfect for a cultural weekend
Sep 2020
I was in this museum with my friends for a weekend. My friends had already been there but for me it was a first. I had heard good things and I was not disappointed. The reception was great, but I was disappointed with the price, there is a student rate but I still find it expensive for students (7 euros entry with the student rate).
It is a very beautiful building (just for that you can go there), the collection is very beautiful and the explanations are very clear. I have good memories of the garden since it is the former cloister of the Benedictine abbey.
I don't think of going back there because in a single visit we can do the whole museum, but for a weekend occupation I recommend.

Stunning

A wonderful building, located in a beautiful area of the city. Many great sights around. Interestingly the building originally was a Benedictine convent! The stunning artworks include many masterpieces of great artists, as well as sculptures and other artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle East and elsewhere. This is a must visit sight.

Typical museum really...

Lots to see over multiple floors in a beautiful old building, with very friendly and helpful staff. From the anatomically accurate sculptures to the gaudy religious artwork to (finally) the real art pieces such as the beautiful Monet's. Worth the €8 entry.

Excellent art gallery and museum. Amazing collection from Monet, Pissarro, Manet, Gaugin and other masters together with ancient Egyptian and Roman artefacts. Well worth a visit and children under 18 free.

Great museum!
Dec 2019
I spent half a day wandering through this museum and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Their Egyptian collection was great (always a crowd pleaser), and their French pieces were also lovely. While there weren't a huge collection of big world masters represented, it was a nice glimpse of artwork through the ages important enough to make available to the public. I didn't feel slighted in the least ... their English guides were helpful, and the space was beautiful. I'd definitely go back.

Fantastic place

The museum itself is presenting some intereting pieces of art but the most interesting is the building itself with its garden at the center. Each first friday of the month, the museum is organising "one evening at the museum" which provides a very specific experience feeling spoiled !
